I've had similar issues with ON1 Photo Raw 2019.5, which I just downloaded and upgraded to. On my MacBook Pro (16GB RAM, macOS 10.14.5) it often lags when switching tools, and I've had it lock up a couple of times.

Yep... I'm having the same issues with the masking... also noticed that the erase tool does not function as well as in the previous version. Yes, there is more lag when swtching tools. Tempted to go back to previous version until the next update.

I had that problem with the earlier version, since I upgraded to the 2019.5 version the AI Brush works fine. I do find it dragging along in other areas. They Recommend 16GB ram, but I think that's closer to what it can get by with. I just ordered more ram for my computer, not a fix for you, but I want a faster computer anyway. Working on 50gb to 200GB files at 16 bit is sure to slow the average computer down.

Welcome to the wild world of ON1 - it's gotten better. Much better, but still not ready for prime time.

I have been very disappointed at the masking speed of the On1 software so I never went pass the trial version. The masking capabilities of Capture One are amazingly fast and reliable in comparison. Please download the trial version and you’ll be convinced.

Gene51 nailed it and I’ve noted “2019.5 not ready for prime time” on numerous ON1 community forums as well as ON1’s customer support. I’ve yet to see any comments contradictory. I also initially installed any updates over the existing version. I have ON1 installed on a 5 yr old Dell 8700.

When I saw real improvement is after I did a clean install of 2019.5.1. I backed up all the presets, textures, etc. Note, I don’t catalog. I uninstalled using the ON1 script available from ON1, cleaned the PC registry, rebooted the computer, turned off the firewall and anti-virus security, installed as administrator, reloaded all the presets, and voila, much improved.

I also noticed after reading the 2019.5.1 installation notes that the graphics card recommendation has been increased from 1 gb VRAM to 2 gb. They will tell you 4 gb is encouraged.

Hi group,

Several weeks ago I purchased ON1 2019.5 RAW. Since then I've found the Develop sliders work good. I just wish the other tools were equal. The tools I've tried were poor at best. The equivalent of the Healing Brush-Clone Stamp, etc. tool in PS CC or Elements is basically worthless OR I've not spent enough time with the program to learn how to use them. They are slow and I spend more time hitting the Cntrl Z keys to undo something than I do in getting an accessible result. I'll be staying with PS CC for the present. Take care & ...

Since I acquired ON1 2018, the very slow performance of ON1 had always been my greatest complaint especially in the photo preview of the Develop module and the very slow exporting of photos. In the develop module it would take at least 8 to 10 seconds for a preview to regenerate. Exporting usually takes 5 minutes to complete even with simple edits. I could live with the slow preview but not the slow exporting. I thought ON1 2019 would solve these problems but no. I have to admit that in the 2019 version the preview and exporting have improved a little bit but they're still slow. Version 2019.5 was the worst because I could not even run it as it always crashed. If you read comments from other users, a lot of them have similar complaints. On the other hand, ON1 Effects as a plug-in runs well.
I am now using Capture One Pro and it is just a pleasure to use. It is a little bit more expensive than ON1 but it is worth the money. Everything is fast, it has the ability to use layers, color management is excellent, exporting only takes 3-4 seconds and it is indeed a very close competitor to Lightroom if not better. I am not looking back and I would highly recommend that you try it for free for 30 days.

I fully agree with your assessment of Capture One Pro. A pleasure to use.
