Is there any way to save user settings with U1 or U2, then reformat the card in slot 1, and still be able to recall user settings?
Use the menu option on the camera to save settings
Copy the file of saved settings to your computer, before you format the card, and then copy it back after?
This is something that you would do as a part of a factory reset.
Get some 256k cards really inexpensive on eBay. Copy each setting you want to save to a different card. I use this system for three setups. Any setting can be recalled at any time, even to a different Nikon. Once you save a set to a card it's gone once it's formatted. Hope this helps. I use this system for five different scenarios for instant recall.
Must have missed something - have reformatted one and / or both cards numerous times without losing my settings. Even sent the D 750 back to Nikon in the recall, without cards - expected the settings to be gone, but they were still there (As they were on the DF after service). I suspect that unless you do the 2 button reset, they'll be there once set and saved.
To my knowledge user settings are saved in camera memory, not on the image card. You only lose them if you reset the camera.
Yes, any current setting can be saved in user 1 or 2 but any current camera setting can be saved on a card. Once the card is reformated it will be lost on the card only. Only one setting can be saved on a card. If a 2nd setting is tried to be saved on the same card it will overight the first. If a photo is taken on the same card with a camera saved setting,
the setting will be overwritten.
The save to card option is only to back them up. The camera isn't reading the U1 and U2 (or all of the other settings for that matter) from your card. Take the card out and look, they will all be there.
It is nice to backup and if you have two of the same body, move settings from one to the other.

Have you been going into the Setup Menu / Save User Settings for U1 and U2?
