A Trip To The Shore

I usually post only one photo in a thread. I'm going to deviate from that today, because I think the series gives you a better indication of what I found than any one single shot. The weather called for mostly cloudy conditions. That can be a bummer on the beach. I decided that I would take an early morning drive to an area about an hour from my house that I had not visited in a while. This is the southern Tip of Long Beach Island. I was using different shutter speeds and different lenses (some with wide angle and others with a 300mm prime) to create a variety of effects. The exposure times range from 1/60 to several minutes. Many were shot with an ND filter and all were shot with a CP filter. It is fairly close to Atlantic City as the bird flies. All comments are, of course, welcome.

Thank you. Had fun on a morning that featured flat light and howling wind. WHooo Whooo!

I especially enjoyed:
#1 for its somber take on a usually over dramatized subject
#2 for the capture of the masses involved in the waves, and for their gentle beauty nicely brought out by the contrast
#3 for the contrast of the two more rugged textures, emphasized by the smoothness of the time-exposed water.

That sums it up pretty nicely. I wanted to try different techniques to show the sea in its many different guises. The sunrise was nice; but there were a lot of clouds and that cut down on the color a bit. When I noticed that bulkhead and the concrete blocks around it, I immediately thought that I would slip on an ND filter and calm the water so that the background did not steal the show from the bulkhead and other foreground elements that were my main subjects. Thanks for your analysis.

#2 is breathtaking! The lighting contrasts: softly glowing against dark; and the gossamer threads of water against the strong forms of rocks - pure art.

Very nice series. I particularly like #2. The Jersey shore just has endless opportunities to create a good image.
Enjoy your summer off.

I've never been fond of "silky" water (or whatever one calls it these days. I like the colors of the first one, but the raw energy of the last one.

I like a picture when it tells its own story. #2 is doing that so well. The power of the waves in this timed exposure show the raw power better than I have ever seen it before. Absolutely a Great Magnificent picture. Show it everywhere you can I think you will get exciting feedback.
