The analogy I use is the car industry. Detroit was asleep at the switch for so long the American manufacturers will never catch up to the Japanese and Europeans, and Canon and Nikon will never catch up to Sony's mirrorless technology.

If they pour r/d into it they could, but the motivation has got to be there....

I got to see, handle and use the 200-600 lens at an event I was the photog. It is a good lens. I has interal focus and weighs less than I expected.

And you have to assume Sony would elect to stand still all the while!

Difference is Detroit was not just asleep at the switch, their products were crap. Also, people in the market for new cars did not have a vested financial interest in their old brands. Today's offerings from Canon and Nikon are certainly not crap; and serious amateurs like those on this forum, with a collection of bodies and lenses built up over the years, may be willing to wait for their legacy brands to catch up, rather than jumping brands.

After 40 years shooting Nikon and Canon pro gear, I couldn't wait any longer for them to catch up to the best tech and performance in FF mirrorless, so I moved to Sony in January 2017 and have never looked back. They have a load of catching up to do, and I have photos to make, so I am happy to have switched when I did.

I predict the Apple will buy Sony in the near future. Match made in heaven.

Granted that comparing the technical shortcomings of say a Ford Pinto and a contemporary DSLR is a bit unfair, the point I was making is that failing to keep current with technological progress while others are doing so (and will continue to advance) works an irreparable injury to a company's competitive stance.

And I'm not sure I'd be so dismissive of automobile brand loyalty, nor forget that legacy glass needs an adapter to mount to a mirrorless body, and that adapter degrades performance to a greater or lesser extent.

Granted that comparing the technical shortcomings ... (show quote)

I was in total agreement with you, BUT lens adapters to mirrorless bodies contain NO glass elements, they are (rear lens element to sensor) spacers, with electronic connections and software to allow lens focusing and aperture control and communication between lens and body. They do not degrade lens optical performance, but can cause autofocusing performance issues if the software algorithms (in the adapter and in the mirrorless body) aren't closely matched.
