4k is for video only, and has no bearing on Digital photographs. One of the highest resolution digital video cameras, the $22,000 Red Dragon, shoots 4k but at about 19 Mp.

If you want to get max resolution for 4k videos, then you should get a 4k laptop. But at 66, my eyes cannot really see the difference.

Can’t you just go camera hdmi=hdmi I’m on 4K tv??

There may not be anything to watch on TV. But there is a use for 4K TVs and will be for 8K TVs. That use is for "slide shows". Most (maybe all) current TVs have USB ports. You can plug in a USB drive with slide shows rendered in 4K from your favorite slideshow or video software. You can pack a bunch of JPEGs on the drive too. All is controlled by the TVs remote.

8K TV's were coming out in July 2017 when I bought 13 4K TV's. I was tempted but since it was new technology, the price was double or triple the price of the 4K TV's, so I passed. I figured the 4K would do for many years what I was planning on doing.

I am sorry. I somehow do not do the right English. You all thought about video .......NO.... I will do the still pictures ONLY .
The question boils down to : Does the new 1920 x 1080 laptop deliver 4K quality PICTURE to 4K monitor thru the regular HDMI cable? OR do I really have to have 4K laptop (gaming graphic card)?

Sorry & thank you. M

To view stills in 4K resolution, your monitor AND video card must be 4K. Otherwise, the image is scaled down to 2K or smaller.

Computer monitors ARE video devices.

I've seen 8K TV with broadcast signal when I was in Japan.

Miro,

A "4K" monitor is still only twice as many pixels horizontal as a 1920 wide monitor. If your original photo is 6000 wide then one of two things must happen.

1. you view it at 100% and you only see slightly more than half the width at a time..
OR
2. your system compresses the 6000 x 4000 into what will fit your screen. This masks some quality issues, of course.

And just a little extra math: the aspect ratio of your images is 3:2 but the aspect ratio of your 1920 x 1080 screen is not the same. For the same, you need 1920 x 1280. So when you display the image on your 1920 x 1080 screen or TV the image will not go full width on the screen.

It is easy to become confused by terms like "4K" because it can refer to the ability of your camera to shoot video AND it can refer to the pixels on the monitor. And, of course, while 4K should mean 4096 it actually means 3840 in most cases.

3840 by 2160 is video 4K. They chose that standard to be compatible with 16:9 aspect ratio files already in existence — i.e.; 1080i/1080P HD content.

True *Cinema* 4K IS 4096 by 2160 at 24.00 fps. (Video 4K is usually 29.97 fps)

To view 4k resolution on a 4k monitor, you need a graphics card capable of 4k output. Otherwise, the 4k monitor will give you the max output of the graphics card in your laptop. Yes, 4k resolution goes give a better view of 24 megapixel photographs, but only if you have a 4k Graphics card, which I doubt you have in your laptop. When I added a 4k monitor to my desktop, I had to buy a graphics card capable of 4k output, which cost, at the time, about 500 USD. For your 4k monitor to work with your laptop, you would need a new graphics card, if that is even possible. In most cases the graphics electronics are built into the motherboard, so basically you are screwed unless you buy a laptop with a 4k screen which would have 6k graphics output availability.

You would be incorrect. 4K is a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. It can be used both for video and still shots - it's simply a measure of resolution - and a form factor baked into one.

The photos from the OP's post, while only capable of HD (or 1920x1080 ) for video obviously exceeds 4K when it comes to stills. Since he is NOT doing video only the stills resolution is relevant and that is jighter than 4K thus a 4K capable system (both video card/laptop and monitor) will show a higher resolution than a HD system.

No smoke and mirrors -no rocket science needed

I am sorry , I have already gotten many hints, but someone confused the issue again .

1. It is my understanding that 4K means resolution ONLY. So my Nikon 7100 shoots even jpegs in 14.5 MB which is 6000 x 4000 <- So it is 4k Quality ....right? Photo salesman tried to tell me that 7100 does not provide 4K.

2. I have bought a 4K LG monitor an tested the quality with a laptop 730 and with a lap top 1920 resolution. I have not seen almost any difference. I also had a 4K game laptop - the difference almost zero.
OK, maybe my picture was not 4K ...but the resolution count is!!
Am I wrong?

3. If I do not intent to do editing the movie (only zoom to see the pictures quality) do I really need 4K laptop? Somebody told me that I do not need 4K gaming computer (graphic card) and a normal HDMI cable. ???

Thank you and sorry for asking again Miro
I am sorry , I have already gotten many hints, but... (show quote)

Hi Miro. Your 4K monitor has 3840 x 2160 pixels or 8.3MP. Your laptop has 1920 x 1080 pixels or 2.1MP.
4K refers to the number of pixels across the top of the screen - 3840 is approximately 4000 so salesmen and advertising people abbreviate it to 4K. The actual pixels on a 1920 x 1080 24/27" monitor can be seen with the naked eye if you move up real close but with your much smaller 15" laptop screen you won't see them unless you use a magnifying glass. You will also need the magnifying glass to see the pixels on your 4K monitor assuming its a 27" Put simply the actual physical size of the pixels is so similar for your different screens that this is why you can't see any difference. Nothing to do with your camera.

Pixels on your monitors are completely different to those in your camera sensor of course. Your D7100 has a sensor with 6000 x 4000 pixels or 24MP. If you apply the same jargon to your Nikon then you shoot 6K but ONLY for still photos. If you shoot video then its 1920 x 1080 or full HD. Many newer cameras allow you to shoot 3840 x 2160 which is what they call 4K video. This is what your photo salesman was saying you can't do with the D7100 it being limited to the 1920 x 1080 video. Beware GAS - he might be trying to sell you a new camera! Anyway I hope I haven't confused you further. Cheers JohnR

You also need a special 4k HDMI cable if you want 4k quality on your 4k Monitor. I edit my still photos on a 4K monitor and much prefer it to a non4k monitor.

Depends on what 4K monitor you buy. I have three 4K monitors and a 4K smart TV, all of which I do editing on. The smart TV is wireless, and the other three are plug-n-play USB.
