Does UHH count as 'social media'?

UHH is a fantastic site and yes it is a social network in a way…especially the chit chat section and the attic….no sure I would say the main photography section is a social site…more educational for me anyway…I learn so much from the questions and mostly from the answers.

FB can serve a purpose…

I joined FB due to the new loft in downtown San Antonio I had just bought in 2008. The loft created a FB page to disseminate information about the status of on going construction, new tenants, just all around happenings. Good way to inform every tenant.

Then it spread to another two properties going up in San Antonio. Then my personal page spread to friends outside these properties to old Army buddies, to old AF buddies on to long ago high school folks. The ratio of me asking someone to be a friend or someone asking me to be their friend was about 90/10.

After reaching over 600 “friends” I said to myself what the hell I don’t know or can’t remember over half these people. I concluded many folks just ask in order to accumulate numbers.

After about 6 years I quit FB completely for multiple reasons.

I’ve since rejoined and now use it for family communication and some other friends. At least now I’m selective as to who I accept as a friend. Down from a high of 600+ so called friends to a little over 100 with half of that being family

The only personal stuff I’ve put on FB Is required by FB, is my birthday.

I also created a second FB page and that is where I put all the pvt and public groups I joined. Like now I’m with 6 different Vietnam Army groups ( must be over 500 groups to join there) since I also spent 20 more years with AF I’ve joined 4 of their groups, and What cha cooking and recipe exchange groups and 2 different photo groups and 3 different home town groups.

I give a cursory review of all the groups I’m in, every 3 or 4th day.

Arguably so, but there are 3 distinguishing features of this forum compared to FB -

1. There are some worthwhile user made rules, and they are enforced,
2. By submitting your creative work to the judgment of your peers, there is a certain honesty among its inhabitants, and
3. I have encountered many intelligent carbon based life forms here.

Over 96% of my friends on FB are family or people I've always known.

Anything I post on FB that even MIGHT be considered personal is only viewable by a close friends group.
99% of what I post is not viewable by the public.
(You can control who sees what.)

It's my impression that FB evaluates, analyzes, cross-references, etc., EVERY bit of information it gets about EVERY person they can get it on. Including, for example, names (and any other information they can glean) of non-FB members who show up on contact lists of FB members. All of this data is stored, permanently, and sold to advertisers and anybody else who will pay for it.

Possibly. But I don't post a lot of stuff.
I purposely ignore any "things you may like" Which is based on liking posts that my friends like or share.
I must drive their analysis algorithm crazy as I never click on what FB suggests.

It's not only FB, mostly all do it. It's called viewing metrics. I looked at things at Lowes, Home Depot, Staples, ... and "suggestions" show up in various places, mostly FB of those exact items. What the Algo can't know, it that I already bought an item, so it keeps "reminding" me about it for about a week.

Your ISP also knows EVERYWHERE you go as all requests for web pages go through them.

The ONLY WAY you cannot be part of any information gathering is to NOT use the internet.

I know this is true, but I didn't think the ISPs were in the business of selling information about you to advertisers, which FB and the other "free" services explicitly do. (As I've seen stated various places around the 'net, "If you're not paying for the service, YOU'RE the product.")

I have no idea if any ISPs sell any type of info, but you can bet the requests are logged.

I don't consider myself to be a total Luddite, but I have never understood the attraction of Facebook, Twitter or any of the other well known social media sites. I don't want my wife to know what I am doing most of the time so I certainly don't want to tell the rest of the World that I am having a BigMac for lunch instead of a kale salad. I nearly signed up for Facebook once, but I actually read the Terms and Conditions and cried off.

Does UHH qualify as social media? If so, can I claim that I actually exist?

Yes UGLY HEDGE HOG qualifies as Social Media. I for one a. Anyone and everyone who registers as a user can post. Predominately, professionals an hobbyists are here at the Forum's table to share. However, people don't need nor want to know what shirt I'm wearing or what I'm eating at the local diner. There are some rules of conduct to follow. That is why there are Forum Administrators that have laid down specific rules. For the most part these rules follow common sense day to day way of living and communicating. We should not be rude crude or obnoxious to each other. Basically we are all on a train ride with a bunch of strangers who we see everyday. It is important to be respectful of each other. Have I made some boo boos and broke the rules. Definitely but I have been quick to apologize and mean it.
I believe that many people have forgotten or have not read the book, "All I Needed To Know I Learned in Kindergarten", by Robert Fulghrum.
It's certainly move valuable than a newspaper, not as voluminous as a user manual and much easier to understand and relate to. I think it should be required reading for registering onto Ugly Hedge Hog.
Yes, Ugly Hedge Hog qualifies as social media.

The question, as I understood it is, is the UHH web site social media, not the difference between Facebook and UHH. UHH is a social media web site, as is Facebook and lots of other interactive websites. The main difference between Facebook and UHH is, UHH membership all have one thing in common, photography. Facebook has photography related forums but it it not geared towards any one category. So, yes, UHH is social media.
As for the OP actually existing? Your guess is as good as mine. ◉‿◉

I post, therefore I exist?

Post a picture of yourself and we will tell you whether or not you exist. Be sure to click download.

I personally would rather frequent a scabrous venereal disease clinic before one of those social media sites.

Social media site, in a way? It's a web based site that facilitates interaction between people. That makes it social media. Not in a way, not partially, not somewhat. It is social media, regardless of which forum or category you are logged on to. Social media is not defined by categories or subjects or topics or content. It's defined by what it does; is used for; interaction between users (people).

I think the Chit-Chat section would be the "social" part.

And the Attic would be called "antisocial media."
