I received a similar call a week or two ago, hung up.

Also received a robo-call in Chinese. I Googled the "number" it was from, turned out to be a UPS toll free number. Obviously spoofed.

I got one on 6/11, he threatened me said that 'my SS account is in some kind of trouble, I need to respond immediately by calling "800xxxxxx" to clarify the matter' 'If not, they will disable my account for any benefit'. I knew this already from news paper I read. So I recorded it and keeping it in my file for the future if I need to do something. I also received call from "IRS" with same type of scam. I always let the answer machine answer it if the caller ID that I don't know!

Some people are still being fooled by that? That has been going around for years, it is nothing new!

As usual, scammers like to take advantage of us hard working (people) photographers. I once thought that the world was a nice place. That was about 90 years ago and I was about 3 years old.

I do not answer calls from numbers I do not recognize. If a caller spoofs my caller ID, and poses as someone I know, and I answer it, I hang up as soon as I realize the caller is not who the ID claimed it was. If someone claims to be my bank, Social Security, The VA, etc, and then starts asking me for info that agency has-my SSAN, my DOB, my checking account #, etc-I hang up. If the caller claims to be SS, the VA, IRS, etc, and wants to talk to me about a problem, I tell them to make me an appointment, and I will come into the office. If the caller declines that offer, I hang up. If a caller threatens me with arrest, audit, etc, I tell him to call my lawyer. Then I hang up. I do not get phone scammed. I wonder why. Hahahaha!

I have an in-law that fell for one of these.
*sigh*
Her husband had gone to a job fair, and left a ton of applications and resumes around.
8 were used to fabricate false identities. That we know of.
Those guys started doing USPS address changes.
Bills that didn't get received, didn't get paid.
Goes to the Post Office, refiles the address change, thought he had it straightened out.
Nope. USPS notified the DMV. Local LEOs picked him up. Check him out. Release him a few days later.
During THAT time she gets a call. Seems there's a warrant. She needs to send $872 to a collection agency, or ol hubby will be taken from the local holding cell to an upstate jail.
She's worried. And angry. And sells his car. Cheap and fast. Pays the warrant. Calls his lawyer.

Which she should have done first. Hubby, LEO and lawyer don't have any record of this so called warrant.
EVEN tho it's considered "public knowledge", most of the public doesn't quite grasp that a letterhead and a fee will get you lists of all the information on most other members of the public.
And there's a couple in Florida who are infamous, and infamously good , gor scamming folk like this.
Legally, if you paid the bill you agreed you owed it. That's why you're told NEVER pay a collection agency.
LEOs told her she's screwed. This ain't a case a cop would take. Wrong side of the country. That amount is half to a quarter of what a cheap lawyer will ask just to get signed. You'll need 2- one here, one there.

Government agencies always send a letter about legitimate issues (IRS, SS, etc), they never call. They may ask you to call them, or send a letter, or log onto a Gov. web site.

No, they always ask you to call with the number given to you, that made them look real! never call back!
