Mystery Solved ...
...Why I often find a "nest" trampled down in the middle of the large pot of purple wood sorrel.
Starlings hunting insects in the dense plants. At one time I saw two of them in the pot. A quick grab shot but the AF is on the plants in front of the bird and his head was moving too fast for the SS. I even got a couple of shots with a bug in the beak but totally out of focus/motion blurred.
7DII, 100-400L @ 400, 1/320 @ f/6.3, ISO 200
hand held at about 70-75', sunny day, center point AF and spot meter (at that range the center AF point covers a lot more than just he bird's head)
I slid the door open more to try and slip out and get closer but as soon as I moved the door all of the birds took off.
