Here is a video of the action I recorded several years ago.
Location is right in Cripple Creek, Colorado.
The vertical pipe under the front of the boiler is for the exhaust steam from the front engine into the smoke box.
The weight of the boiler is supported farther back on the front engine.
The boiler is mounted solid with the rear engine.
For those of you that are familiar with the valve gearing, this locomotive has a German designed valve gearing.
I need to work on my lack of video skills........
