Dbl Download?

Searching through UHH with the obvious wrong worded question. What I'm wondering is why some double downloaded images are so much more specifically detailed than others? Some seem to Zoom in very far and others hardly at all - greater file resolution?

It depends on the size of the image the user posted. If the image is small a double download may have little or know effect. This image as posted is 800 x 600 pixels. The 'thumbnail is reduced to 600 pixels.

Yes, when the pixel resolution of the file attachment closely matches the pixel resolution of your screen, there are not details to be "zoomed into" in the attachment. This post explains why: Recommended resizing parameters for digital images

The primary viewing image is a reduced thumbnail.
When you click on "download", you get the original (whatever size that was posted).
When you click the magnifier, your browser displays it larger, IF the image is larger that the initial download display.
(It really is not a "double" download as the image is already in cache, it is not being downloaded again, simply being magnified by the browser. Just like many things, someone coined the phrase based on their conception and everyone ran with it.)

And on a related note: the width of all thumbnails is 600 pixels (unless the posted original image is smaller than 600), while the height can be seemingly infinite (I think I posted something 5000 pixels tall as a test, and it showed that way in thumbnail).

Re Longshadow's observation, the term "double download" is incorrect and therefore meaningless. Shame on whoever first coined it 🤓

A post this past week also gave some examples and consideration of posting large, full-resolution images: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-595294-1.html

What is a double download?

1. Clicking on "download" to see the original image.
2. Clicking the magnifying glass in the browser to enlarge the image.

(The image was already downloaded in step 1, and erroneously thought to be a second download upon clicking the magnifying glass in the browser. The image is NOT downloaded again, simply "enlarged" by the browser.)

Enlarged download would be a more appropriate reference, but doesn't sound as cool as "double download".

Yes, the greater the size of the image the person uploads, the larger the "enlargement" will be via the magnifying glass after downloading the file.
