From an organised environmental portrait session yesterday. Not a lot of environment but I think I got the ‘essence of Janet’ in this one.

Excellent pose, but I find that when using my hands to crop tight on her face, the "essence" becomes in direct communications with me rather than competing with the shine of the lower left portion of the photo.

OK Don, so a tighter crop before printing. Thanks for your contribution, it helps me see the light (or not, in this case).

I see what Don is saying, but the photo is still awesome in its original presentation.

Yes, I fully agree... Janet is an "it Girl" ... not a raging beauty... but she grabs your eye whereas raving beauties are just raging beauties and do not have "it"

Spot on Don. I must admit I wasn’t impressed when she arrived at the venue - but five minutes into the shoot and I was impressed by what I was getting. She’s obviously got her own style and you can take it or leave it - I think everybody (18 of us) thought she was a great model by the time the first tea break came up. Still sorting through them but I’ll post a couple more in due course.

Love the mood you have captured.
As a beginner in the portrait game, was your main light above and pointed at her left shoulder?
If so, how did you then get such an even light on her face and hand - a second low light pointed upwards at a much lower power, or a reflector of some sort?
Ignore my questions if they intrude too much!

Not at all, I’m happy to discuss methods anytime.
This was a little ‘aside’ really. We had two models at a Victorian water pumping station. Janet was waiting to be posed in the room we were in and was leaning on the entrance door, in the mid-afternoon sunlight. Somebody grabbed a reflector and positioned it low left and, presto!, a rather nice effect. As soon as you point a camera at these girls you get a series of poses - they are very experienced and helpful.
From the outset our tutor emphasised the importance of the relatively inexpensive reflector in environmental portraiture.

Thank you Thomas. Yes, she knew how to present herself, and tireless too.

'Essence of Janet' is a real beauty Dave. Love the pose, tone and red hair. Her expression is absolutely stunning. It appears to me that the white (sclera) of her eyes and teeth are a little over processed. This motivates me to keep honing at my own images. Thanks !!!
