Are these Amazon tricks merely sleazy? Or outright illegal?

The following was a specialized paperback book.

Is $5.99 to mail it, outrageous and a ripoff?
What about the stunt of charging tax on shipping and handling?

Now that Amazon has such a dominant position, it apparently intends to gouge customers in every way possible.

Cant tell if the charges are correct without knowing the tax rate of the city and state it's being shipped to.

Are you really buying from Amazon, or one of it's "affiliates"?

I think a book like this is published by and sold by Amazon.

Bottom line is it’s $19.69 complete ... if you don’t like it that much then don’t buy it.

You're correct. But due to Amazon's predatory and scorched earth practices, many books are only available through Amazon.

Probably.

But if I don’t like it that much I still wouldn’t buy it.

Yeah, me too. By Carson & Normandie.
We go out to eat, women pick up their calculator app, men just drop the buckazoids.
?!?! Say the women. It's easy! 15% tip + 10% tax = 25%. $10 = $12.50. Various EZ ways to figure out.

But yeah. You bought a book, @ $20.
Amazon, eBay, everybody has these situations. I can buy a cable for $9.99, free and fast shipping, or buy one (with the same exact pictures and text) for only $5! With $4.99 s+h.
Amazon has other vendors to the right of the main ad, selling the same product, some new some used.
Same ol. As the price goes down, costs go up.

I have Amazon Prime for $10/m and get free shipping and the Prime online movies are free. [goodbye $12/m netflix] I feel guilty ordering a $5 item and getting the next day free. Today they will deliver a digital indication battery charger and battery combo for my Sony HX50... the same price as on Ebay... but instant delivery.

I was turned on to Amazon Prime by my friend in England. She lives 200k from London [Latin word for Fog] and gets her delivery in a small village the next day!

Historically I liked living near a large city ... if I wanted a computer part... there was Tiger Direct, Circuit City, and what was that name.. Oh yes, Radio Shack... Poof, all gone except for Tiger Direct online.

I use to be an Ebay shopper because shipping was usually included in the price... but Amazon Prime has won me over.

Lots of negativism here! The $5.99 is for shipping AND handling. That is a pretty reasonable charge, and is not really related to the cost of the item being shipped. Most places charge this. And the claim the Amazon's "predatory practices" make it the only place to buy many books is just not wrong. I have purchased many out-of-print books THROUGH Amazon from used book stores across the country. It is a great service.

What I don’t understand is why Amazon is charging tax on shipping & handling?

It IS high. But here in the "Birthplace of Civil Rights" (Montgomery, AL) the combined rate is now 10%.

If you have a Roku device at home, movies by the thousands are free (included with Prime). I unplugged from cable years ago and use Roku. Netflix and amazon Prime have a ton of shows, movies included plus movie rentals.

As if I have time to watch...
