I have been taking pics for a few years with a Nikon but I know I have a lot to learn to take better pictures. I recently adopted 2 kittens and would love to take some actions pics of them. Plus I love taking pics at Lake Michigan and in nature. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Respectfully the university of YouTube will help, loads of professional photographers have got their start there

Welcome. Learning is fun in photography.
Welcome! For pictures of the kittens, be sure to get down at eye level with them for the best images. Advice is free, so post and store example images and you can get good analysis and actionable feedback. The more you practice, the more you'll improve.
Here's my favorite pic of them so far......

Nice! This is also an example of a few ideas for both the image capture and post processing. You might try getting a bit closer and / or cropping the resulting image. You might try using your onboard flash as a fill flash. Or in post processing, going in one of two directions: darkening the 'darks' for more a silhouette. Or, 'lighten' the shadows to bring out more of the details of the cats. The reference to 'store original' in my earlier comments applies to a check-box that appears when attaching the image file. This allows for downloading the image and viewing in detail the image focus at 100% as well as technical details of the image known as EXIF.
The best I have to offer is that you learn your camera first. Learn to use shutter speeds and lens openings. Learn the different metering modalities. Learn about how to expose the subject.
Practice, practice, practice.
Back when I started, I had the privilege of being trained by a very good photographer. He told me, "Shoot the shit out of that film, Steve...it's cheap! You'll improve with every roll." That was good advice.
Today, you are much more fortunate. You pay just one time and you can shoot the shit out of your SD card with no further cost!
Welcome to the Hog, enjoy.
