What's for dinner.

Last evening I asked my wife, "What's for dinner"? How about we have a "Hobo Dinner", I suggested. It has been quite some time. Sounds good to me. You are in charge. (somehow I got the feeling that I was not really in charge).
Since I am in charge, I would like to delegate, you know that is what bosses do. They delegate. She again repeated, you are in charge and you have no one to delegate to.

Hobo dinner recipe:

1 sheet of tin foil large enough to wrap all of the ingredients in.
1 potato for each person, sliced like fried potatoes, you can peel them if you want or leave the skins on.
1 large carrot sliced the same thickness of the potato.
1 large onion sliced into ring 1/4 inch thick and then cut in half.
2 pats of butter for each meal
Salt and pepper to taste.
1/4 pound hamburger patty
These ingredients are one for each meal.

Procedure:
Lay out foil ready to wrap the other ingredients on.
Layer each ingredients in order given or you can switch the carrots and potatoes if you like. This will burn the carrot but it actually makes the carrots sweeter, my brother in law actually likes burnt carrots. Layer each and salt and pepper each layer as you assemble them. Put the butter on top of the onions and as it melts it will give the ingredients below a kind of sauce. When done layering put the patty on top and seal the tin foil. Be sure and vent the tin foil by punching a couple of holes in them.
Build a open fire and let it die down to coals. Or you can throw them on the briquettes of the BBQ. I suppose you can use the oven to cook them but that would take the fun out of it. Throw the meal on the coals and cook until done. Be sure and use tongs to extract and check because they will be hot, hot, hot.

We have done that several times but, using the grill and a steak instead of the burger. Very tasty indeed.

Hard to say unless there. Remove from the coals and unwrap gingerly so as to not burn yourself and you can wrap them back up. Tongs are necessary. When a knife or fork penetrates the potato easily they are done. Do not puncher the foil on the bottom. Be careful and do not burn yourself.

Did this when I was a scout but if I remember we were told to deal the foil so that the steam would not escape. This kept the ingredients from burning.

Started doing that 40 years ago when my son was in scouts. Been doing that, with variations, ever since, usually when camping. Put whatever is available, or sounds good, in heavy duty foil, seal tightly, and throw in the campfire. With practice you can judge when it is done. I sometimes prep these beforehand at home and throw them in the ice chest.

Make sure they are sealed! Had one that wasn’t well sealed “absorb” a considerable amount of water. I prefer broiled food over boiled! I do seal them to keep the steam in the packet to keep the food from becoming too dry.

Pork-n-Beans on the side. Good stuff!
Even better - add some brown sugar and a pinch of cinnamon to the beans. Or bar-b-que sauce.

Or just dig them into the coals of a campfire, and leave them for about, I guess, 30 minutes

Thanks to all that responded. I do hope you have had a chance to try and enjoy. It really is a scrumptious meal and easy. And it can be fun for adults and your kids will love it. Just do no let them burn themselves.
Personally, I like mine with more potatoes than carrots and onions. The onions take longer to cook than the rest, so maybe putting them on the bottom will speed up their cooking but at the risk of burning the carrots. But like I said but carrot are sweeter than regular carrots.

Sounds good to me. Some years ago there was a cookbook about cooking under the hood of your car. There were directions on wrapping different recipes in tinfoil such as the hobo meal described here and placing these on the car engine. There were directions about how far you had to drive before the meal was cooked. I think the name of the book was Manifold Destiny.
