I am trying to do a firmware update for my Sony A6500 (1.03 to 1.06) using my iMac (10.13.6 OS). However, when I connect the camera to iMac, PlayMemories program on iMac starts and begins copying all images from iMac to itself. In the process it disables (or ties up) my trackpad. The only thing that I can do to interrupt this process is to shut the camera off. When I've tried to repeat the process, the same thing happens. I wasn't able to find a setting on PlayMemories to prevent it from automatically starting to copy all images from my computer and essentially take over the computer. Any suggestions?
Sounds like a very frustrating situation. If PlayMemories is provided by/developed by Apple, you need to call AppleCare and ask about turning PlayMemories off. If PlayMemories is a 3rd party app you loaded from the App Store, you need to go to the App Store and find out who the Developer of the app is and contact their support folks. Good luck.
I switched from iMac to PC to install update and update worked fine

I think that PlayMemories is a Sony program, not Apple's.

THAT ^^^^ ;-)
Always hearing same story ...
Go to a library or whatever it
takes, but use a Windows PC.
I never specifically checked
my a6500, but some of my
cameras have a user choice
for the behavior of their USB
port. Perhaps it's set to Auto
and a different setting would
solve the problem ?

Yeah, I have a pc laptop too.
Maybe a family member or friend has a pc you can use.
Exactly the same thing happened to me when I tried to update from .01 to .05, computer froze, could not use mouse.
Good luck
My update to a6500 from my MacBook worked flawlessly. You do have to remove the memory card from the camera first, so don’t know if that makes a difference.

I did have the card removed from the camera. The problem was that once camera was connected to iMac, PlayMemories started automatically and took over the computer without allowing me to intervene.
Play Memories is a Sony Software. Would be VERY careful with this situation. On another note
if your transfer of firmware to your a6500 of the firmware update is interrupted you can screw
the camera up. My question is do you have a card in the camera? When i put a card in my Mac
it opens in in my editing automatically and wants to ingest the video. I have updated firmware
many times for all my Sony's. Make sure the camera has a fresh battery and or plugged in power.
Sony warns you.
PS As far as I know Play Memories has been discontinued.
Does the update require Play Memories? Do you use PM for any reason? I uninstalled PM for the reason you stated. Have not missed it.

I wasn't sure if the update required it and was thinking about uninstalling it.
I just looked at the Sony support site for the 6500. I did not see anything indicating a need for PM. In fact it says to turn off ALL applications.

Thanks. I will uninstall it and give another try.

Before you connect the camera, open the PlayMemories program and look under Preferences at the Settings. If you have the "Application autostart" checked, PlayMemories will automatically startup and transfer photos. Uncheck this box to disable the automatic startup.
