Hi everyone. I have a Nikon D500 and for some reason I don’t have a clue about, I am seeing a rectangle line in my composer view that says 1x3 in the top right corner. Never there before. What does it mean? How do I get rid of this? I am traveling and rather nervous about what It is and how it got there. Thank you all.

They are probably the Viewfinder Grid Display. Look in the Custom Setting Menu>d Shooting/Display.

Check page 7 of your manual.
1.3x crop indicator.

From these diagrams, anyone can see how simple it is to learn the fine points of a typical DSLR.
Yeah, right... a classic case of "feature creep."

Wikipedia: Feature creep is the excessive ongoing expansion or addition of new features in a product, especially in computer software, videogames and consumer and business electronics. These extra features go beyond the basic function of the product and can result in software bloat and over-complication, rather than simple design.

BINGO!

You can accomplish exactly the same thing simply by cropping the image in post-processing! No need for it to be done "in camera". In fact, doing that will be irreversible. If you instead crop a copy in post-processing, leaving the original file un-cropped, you'll have the option to later use the full image if you wish.

I managed to accidently get my D500 into that crop mode. Finally figured it out but there are an awful lot of settings that are easily changed & can be a pain to back out. I keep a digital copy of the manual on a small tablet that goes with me most places I carry that camera.

When all else fails, read the instructions...but the OP is traveling and probably doesn’t have the manual with him. I put mine in Dropbox, so that I could access it if necessary!

Also, search the App Store for Nikon Manual Viewer 2 app. The app allows you to download any or all of the Nikon camera manuals. It has an easy to use manual search function that allows you to find what you are looking for in your manual quickly and easily. There are IOS and Android versions, can be loaded on your phone and/or tablet. It’s a great alternative to downloading a pdf to your device!!!

Great idea!!! I didn't know about this. I loaded it for my 2 Nikon cameras and it works like a charm.Thank you! Too bad Sony doesn't have this!

EDIT: They do! It's called Sony Camera Handbooks, except you have to pay for them.
