I'll take a shot at answering your questions. There are several of them. I seldom go into the Chit Chat section but I saw this in The Photography section.
1. Yes we are all brainwashed from kindergarten on, but many come to their own conclusions about life, politics, religion and love and find their own belief system. They reject the brainwashing they don't agree with and keep the brainwashing they agree with. The brainwashing is the raw material and our belief system is what we do with it.
2. Are "creative" people less brainwashed? I don't think so. They are just brainwashed in their own way.
3. Does brainwashing interfere with creativity? Obviously not, because creative people reinforce their brainwashing with their creativity (eg. Nazi propaganda was most creative, as is all propaganda).
Bob many Hoges here are so negative about video. I am passionate about still imagery. But I think as
a movie makers. And good photography in a telling story is a group of photos telling a story.
I have said here that image making is film, video, digital stills and just looking. I have mentioned here
that I producer every year a huge running festival on the shores of DE. I always try to explain to people what I am trying to do. I said i shoot it like a documentary as if your were viewing or walking through
an event like your were there. I warned them and they have been OK with this approach.
I have found making images with improvisation a big high. I grew up in New York City and everything
was usually whizzing by. So I guess that is creative brainwashing.
4. How does creativity work? I believe it works as a mechanism of problem solving. Creativity doesn't spawn ideas, creativity is a byproduct of using your brain to solve a particular problem or reach a goal. It's stretching your brain beyond what it already knows. An example is solving a math problem, or building a bookshelf, or editing a video.
5. Not that you have a digital camera, and since you have a background in it, why not get involved in making videos? I find the whole process of making videos, shooting, lighting, editing videos and sound to be a very creative exercise.
