Is it possible to wear a DSLR Nikon D610 on the strap around my neck on USA domestic flights? I realize that it needs to go through security on the conveyor, but thought it may get gentler treatment if I wear it on the flight rather than being in checked baggage. Your thoughts?

I avoid EVER putting my camera gear in checked baggage. The only exception to that is I recently packed a small tripod in with my clothes, but it still went aboard as a carry on bag. All cameras, lenses, medication and electronics I pack in my carry on. I also have been known to wear a photographer's vest and put stuff in that... wearing it means it isn't a carry on. I don't know if they will allow you to hang it around your neck like a necklace or consider it a piece of baggage like a shoulder bag.

Good question. I would certainly hope so. I use my camera bag as my personal carry-on (In addition to my carry-on suitcase).

Maybe I am misunderstanding your question but I have worn my camera on my shoulder for years with no problem. i take it off and run it thru security of course. Sometimes i might have in a small camera bag with extra batteries and SD cards etc.

My camera gear goes in a carry on - never in a checked luggage. I use a Lowepro pack pack which will fit under seat or in the overhead (it also fits in the overhead of small Regional jets). I also have a small roller bag that does the same. I have strapped a travel tripod to the pack pack with no problem. Years ago I had a point & shoot stolen out my checked bag. I only check my cloths. All your batteries must be in your carry on - not your checked bag. I also tape the electrical contacts. I am on precheck and wiz thru TSA. If not, they may inspect your gear and ask you to turn in the camera. You can have a battery in the camera. I do not believe they would allow you to have a camera hanging on your neck during take offs or landings. For foreign travel check the airline for carry on bag size & weight limits.

Yes.
Also as others have noted, carry on only.
Do not put your camera/lenses in checked luggage. If you want to carry your camera around your neck, you may want to make sure you can take the lens off and store both in a handbag or your wife's purse :-)

I have never had a problem with my Lowepro bags for carry-on. (Regional or long haul).
One will fit under the seat and one will go in the overhead. I have used both on all types of planes (overhead one is a little more risky if I board late on a full flight and the overheads are full).

Will take the smaller one if any of my legs include a regional carrier that is not on the Star Alliance network (my status allows me to board first so not an issue there).

I would think "yes" to wearing the camera around your neck when boarding. Sending the camera thru TSA screening in one of their tubs doesn't seem to be a problem, either. And, to echo others here... NEVER put your camera gear in checked baggage!

No problem with Camera Carry on. I would use some sort of camera bag to avoid dings etc.

Agree. I can't imagine bumbling down a packed airplane aisle with a DSLR on a shoulder strap. And then what - you have a loose DSLR sitting under your seat or in the bin? They are not going to let you hold it in your lap during takeoff and landing. I use either a Lowepro camera bag or a hard-sided padded case which fits underneath a seat or in the overhead bin. Never a problem.

I would guess the more "Visible" your gear is will be less subject to any delay in your inspection process. The TSA inspection requires those inspection Officers to show respect but also to make sure NOTHING that is dangerous to the Aircraft or the Passengers to be eliminated during the Inspection process. Hopefully with the full cooperation with all Passengers, knowing it is done for THEIR safety.

Never, ever check your camera for an air flight. Apart from the theft of it, your camera will suffer from rough handling.

I always carry my DSLR aboard a flight while stowed in a camera bag with a shoulder strap. I also carry my laptop computer aboard in a soft case.

I stow my carry-on luggage in the overhead bin. I put the computer and the DSLR under the seat in front of mine. This arrangement the airlines accept, in my experience.

Dave327, What size is your Lowepro? I'm looking for one that will fit under the seat or in the overhead of small regional planes. Thank You, Lou

on our 14-day cruise/tour to Alaska,I used my camera bag as carry on. No issues at any of the airports we went through including customs in Vancover. Airports were: Oklahoma City ,Chicago and Vancover.
Have an awesome trip and enjoy!!!!!!

Not to hijack the threat, but I am currently considering purchasing a Lowpro Flipside 400 AW II. Can anyone with experience with this bag tell us whether it will fit under the seat in front of me on domestic flights? Small regional jets?
