I have been contemplating a new lens for a while and had chatted with someone from Adorama a few times and applied for an Adorama credit card so I could get financing (and was approved). The person I chatted with is gone for the day, but when I placed an order for a Tamron 150-600g2 for my Sony A-mount the person on the phone thinks the chatter erred in a hotlink she (?) sent me during our conversation. The phone person will talk to the chat person tomorrow morning and give me a call. I'm hoping it wasn't a mistake that I was offered the premium bundle for the price of the regular bundle (a saving of about $60, and includes a focus target and footed monopod). The reviews have for the most part been great about this lens and there are times when, during airshows or shooting birds, my 70-300 just isn't long enough. My birthday is next month so I'm going to consider this a birthday present.

Interesting...I was going to save my money and get a gimbal, but it looks like it would work. As far as CIZ, I was unsatisfied with the quality of the images I got when using it (perhaps I had an a330 the time before and hadn't used it since??). I think I'd rather just have pure optics anyways. A 500 f/4 would cost 1/2 of what my car cost, so in that sense the Tamron is a bargain. Besides I deal with special needs kids 4 hrs a day on a bus. Don't I deserve something nice once in a while? I've tried using tri/mono-pods at airshows, but I kept tripping on a leg or had trouble twisting the camera fast enough...I always gave up and hand-held anyways.

You do need a decent lens, a decent sensor and very good technique for CIZ to be of value.

Just ordered the lens bundle this morning. I'll have plenty of time to practice with it and calibrate the focus (if it needs to be done) before Oshkosh...maybe I'll try to find some hawks or eagles. The sales price quoted was honored, I'm happy to say :) This is the most I've spent on a single item be quite a bit - I think my next most was my macro lens. Still considering renting an a99ii for the week...will need to seriously check my bank account before I do that though...this might be enough money to spend for a while.
Just make sure you pay it off before the interest kicks in. If you don't pay in full before the period ends you will have to pay 29% interest.
It only hurts once! Have fun.

Just wondering what you meant by "the compromised tripod collar?" Isn't the Arca mount on the lens supposed to balance the attached unit to minimize any stress on the ballhead? My Sirui head looks pretty hefty and my tripod is a Manfroto carbon fiber model...Id've thought that would be sturdy enough. Of course I've never had a big chuck of metal and glass in front of a sensor before so what do I know.

I have used several large lenses - including the Tamron G2. IMO, ALL of the large zooms have compromised tripod collars. Most of the (considerable) weight is at the front end of the lens and the tripod collar is mostly fully at the opposite END. On top of that, the mass and composition of the collar is relatively quite small/light for it's job ! - and it does not matter how big/good your tripod or head or how balanced it is in the ultimate stabilizing of the lens with this type collar because the collar itself will allow a very slight flexing ! The zooming action of the lens takes up the space where the tripod collar SHOULD be !
So, generally, PRIME lenses are much better in this regard.

CIZ ???
Clear Image Zoom...it's Sony's version of digital zoom. It's a magnifying glass symbol on the body and it augments the physical lens (a 100mm shot + CIZ = a 150 or 200 mm shot). As was previously stated sensor and glass quality matter i.e. garbage in garbage out.
