At first I thought this was funny . . . then I realized the awful truth of it.

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
At which he's fed.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.

Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts
Anyway!

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries
Tax his tears.

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.

Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers,
Then tax him more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid.

Put these words
upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me to my doom...'

When he's gone,
Do not relax,
It's time to apply
The inheritance tax.

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, and our nation was the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world, and Mom stayed home to rear the children.
What on earth happened? Can you spell "politicians"?
And we now get to "press 1" for English ! ! !

The list needs to be subdivided into Fed, State, County, City/Town categories.

I respectfully disagree. A simple search tends to refute this particular rant.

Edit This is a tax table from 1919

Hmmm,

“For example, in 1913 when the federal income tax was implemented to help finance World War I, the marginal tax rate was 1% on income of $0 to $20,000, 2% on income of $20,000 to $50,000, 3% on income of $50,000 to $75,000, 4% on income of $75,000 to $100,000, 5% on income of $100,000 to $250,000, 6% on income of $250,000 to $500,000, and 7% on income of $500,000 and up.”

“The top rate of the War Revenue Act of 1917 had taxed all income above $2,000,000 at a 67% rate. The act was applicable to incomes for 1918. For 1919 and 1920 the top normal tax rate was reduced from 12 percent to 8%. This reduced the top marginal tax rate that combined normal tax and surtax from 77% to 73%.”

And then of course there were also the local taxes and fees. For example, how did any small town or big city pay for simple things like a policeman or any sort of infrastructure? You could live off the land then and survive, but I wouldn’t want to go back to that sort of life. Plus we haven’t touched on sharecroppers, company towns and other types of indentured servitude.
All of the progress our country has made has been paid for by its citizens one way or another. Those who rail against taxes and fees are not going to give up the conveniences of modern life.
My opinion, and I’m sticking to it.

So the income tax was invented in 1913 to help finance WWI, which started in 1914? Back then the politicians were looking ahead.

If I recall correctly, fire prevention was handled by fire companies who worked on subscription. You paid your money and got protection. Not taxes because they were private organizations. Sort of an insurance company,

The income tax was created via the XVI Amendment. Congress had attempted to use an income tax as early as the 1890's. However, the Constitution forbade direct taxation. There had been an income tax during the 1861-1865 war, but it was repealed before the U.S. Supreme Court could rule on it. There was a lot of concern as to funding the Government based on tariffs alone. So, Congress drafted the XVI Amendment, which was ratified in 1913. It had nothing to do with funding the Great War. Woodrow Wilson, a Progressive, was very much in favor of an income tax, so the big income earners would have to pay their "fair share".

As to fire protection, you are correct. The practice still exists today. There are all types of fire protection districts, especially in non-incorporated areas around the country. Even in more highly populated areas of the country, there are still volunteer firefighting organizations in incorporated towns, townships, and even cities. Their firefighters are, in many instances, better equipped and trained than their urban brethren. I moved from one such city in 1982. Our fire insurance rates were the lowest available in the country.

Oh so true, but where would we be without taxes?
My problem isn't with taxes, it's the way the assholes waste the money, But what the heck that's the way it is!!!
Just wait, we will be back close to those times the way things are going.
The good thing is I probably won't see it. The bad thing is my daughters could.

How about a list of "fees," now. That's become a popular term.

Had me smiling about this one. Per example > Went to renew the registration on my '03 truck awhile back. Okay, can do it online, that's kewl! Filled out what needed to be filled out and come to the PAY part. 18 dollars extra to file online. Cancelled that and mailed it. No fee except postage stamp.

The year is 1910
One hundred ten years ago.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some statistics for the Year 1910:
************ ********* ************
The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.
Fuel for cars was sold in drug stores only.
Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower !
The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.
The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2,000 per year,
A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME.
Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which
were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard.'
Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.
The Five leading causes of death were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke
The American flag had 45 stars.
The population of Las Vegas was 30!
Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet.
There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and
Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.
Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores.
Back then pharmacists said, 'Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind,
Regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health'
Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or
domestic helper.
There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. !

Just thought the comparison was interesting.
