Green Shield Bug

This is a Green Shield Bug that I found today and posed for a focus stacked image. The pale pinkish background is a piece of colored paper placed a distance behind it in the back of two stacked translucent drink cups with white paper towel between them. The subject is illuminated with two constant IKEA LED desk lamps positioned to shine through the drink cup diffuser that is my standard setup for this type of imagery.

Of course this is another focus stacked image. It consists of 742 separate shots combined in Zerene Stacker Pro.

With the lenses and extensions that I use each step of the camera travels 10-microns. It took 45-minutes to take all of the shots for this image.

I shoot with Mirror Up and I close my viewfinder to avoid fugitive light from affecting the sensor. I use a PC to control the WeMacro digital motorized macro rail which I program based on the size of the subject and the distance the stack must travel. Flat facing subjects require less and prospective views like this one must travel further. Depending upon the size of the subject and the total distance the setup has to travel, I change between full frame and cropped size view modes to avoid artifact lines and smears.

The lenses that I use are a 50mm f2.8 enlarger lens that I have reverse mounted. It is directly connected to a Raynox 150 208mm single element lens that is also mounted in reverse. I then connect those to lenses to 162mm of extension tubes. I've found the sweet spot of the lens to be f/5.6 based on the constant lighting setup that I use.

I process the stacked images on an ASUS gaming computer with a Core7 processor and 16-gig of RAM. This image took a bit over 3-hours to process so when one of them does not turn out as I hope it takes a lot to start over.

That is so impressive and the results with the shield bug are just fantastic. Thanks for walking us through your procedures and describing your set up.

A beautiful stack Gary, I rather like Shield bugs and their various pretty instars.
