What is a good small wide angle lens for a Nikon D 800 either Nikon or tamron, or another third party lens. Starting at 15 or 18 mm

Look at Tokina. Most of their lenses are built in Japan.

I have a Tokina 11 to 16 f2.8. It's not small but it's very good. So I also suggest looking at Tokina. Maybe a little slower, f4 or there abouts should be smaller and lighter. It's the first Tokina I've owned and I'm very impressed.

A very good general purpose (from astrophotography to weddings) is the Nikon 20mm f1.8.

D800 is a full frame camera.

What will you be shooting?

If astrophotography - then the Rokinon 14mm F2.8 at under $400 is an excellent choice. The Nikkor 14mm F2.8. Sigma has a 14 mm F1.8 that a friend swears by. But it is $1600.

Tokina only has 2 full frame lenses that might work - the 16-28, and the 17-35.

Love the Sigma 10-20mm
Not a huge fan of Sigma lenses in general, but this one has produced some really great pics for me, and it's one of the most heavily used lenses in my kit.

I second the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 . The copy I have on my D800 and D4S is tack sharp , not only in the center but the corners also. It is built like a tank. This lens is a great bang for the buck.
Enjoy the journey,
Jim

the 11-16 is a lens designed to be used on a crop sensor, not a full frame. I also have the 11-16, fine on my D300, it is indeed a great lens, but not suited well on a full frame body

I like the Nikon 18-35 on my D750, doesn't have VR but lighter and less expensive than the 16-35.
