What is this bird in the surf?

I took this photo earlier this month in the surf on Edisto Is., SC. The online lists of shore and water birds are not helpful. Do you know what bird this is? Thanks.

Did you already know the bird? If not, how did you look it up? I have David Sibley’s book, but you pretty much have to know where to turn in the book by knowing something about the bird you’re investigating. I expected there would be a way to look it up through process of illumination, but there is not.

Yes, I already knew the bird. I mainly use Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America. Mine is copyright 2000. I'm sure there are newer ones. He has the birds divided into categories--Shorebirds, Ducks and Geese etc, etc.

I took a screenshot of your photo, and my wife uploaded it to the Cornell Lab Merlin Bird ID app. Ruddy Turnstone was they returned.

That app is very handy to have. I've also found trying to match a bird to a guidebook to be difficult and problematic.

I use the Audubon app for Android....can look up birds quickly by many various ways from sound to look. Quick, easy to use and it was free when I downloaded it. Almost always have my phone so I can check it add where I saw it.

I have the Audubon field guides for birds. Their advantage is instead of drawings, their examples are actual pictures. However, I also use the Cornell Merlin site on my computer.

I have the same trouble with several different bird books. There is a large flock of small crested birds that roost on a nearby telephone line that I haven't been able to get out to photograph and cannot identify though my 18 power Canon binocs and several books. When I can get a shot I'll post it for some UHHer's consultation!
