Galveston, Texas. It's their defense against killer hurricanes and was built right after the deadly hurricane of 1900 that killed an estimated 8,000 people.

How high is that wall? Doesn’t look like it would offer much help.

It's about 17 feet high. It's like a thick dike, and falls off on the other side. It's wide enough for a four-lane road plus road parking and construction of a row of buildings on the sheltered side. However, in recent decades, there has been some bad flooding from hurricanes, but no bad loss of life. So it's doing some good.

I visited Galveston about 30 years ago Voss. Most of the people that lived there in 1900 were gone, but the reminders are still there.

Tnx. I didn’t think it was that high.

Nice pic. I'd crop the left to between the streetlights just so the building bleeds off.

True. But I'll bet it's changed a lot since you were there. They've had at least two major hurricanes since then, accompanied by some serious flooding. But not the loss of lives. But on a brighter note, they do love their festivals. They have some of the best.

In truth, it didn't seem that high on those occasions when I've been there. That may be for its highest point. Now you've got me thinking about it. If you go to either end, it's essentially at water level. Perhaps its main purpose is to break the force of the waves. I can't say.
