Detail of maple twirlie

Hi All,

Our backyard was inundated with millions of the spinning twirlies on a windy day. I felt like a fool chasing them with a camera, and finally mounted all the extension tubes I had for a detail silhouette against the blue sky. I was holding it in my hand against the sky with the focus drifting in and out, so decided to use the focus peaking function which makes the in focus areas glow red, so I turned it in my hand trying to get the plane of sharp focus parallel to the camera as the red of the focus peaking moved across the surface.

Any one else see the similarity to a cicada front wing?
Many other insects, too.

Wow, that's great! I thought it was a wing. Focus peaking function?? That's new one on me. Can you tell me more about that? Does Nikon do that? I have a D500, D7100, D5000 & D200. Am I missing something?

I think it's a mirrorless thing. In manual focus the parts in focus glow red. It's strange with macro because with the slightest movement of the camera or subject the red washes over the subject until you turn it just so and it is all red.

Ok, thanks for the info. I don't think I will be going mirror-less anytime soon so I guess I'll lose out on that.

Had a chance to look. Just happen to have a cicada. Wing (and the rest)on hand.

Billiards tonight. My game and eyes need work.
Irksome, by the time I became proficient at the game, my eyes were going.
Oh well.
Later, Gary.

I said I had a cicada wing.
A few of the Neuróptera, Corydalis, for one, are closer a match.

Here it is.
