Went to use my D500 and set the shutter speed and couldn't go faster than x250. What happened?

Which mode are you shooting in? Maybe the dial is set to aperture priority>

If I were you, I would start looking at any of the camera settings related to the flash sync speed which happens to be 1/250 of a second. If you are not able to identify the offending culprit you can always do a factory reset by simultaneously pressing and holding the two green buttons on the camera.

Use the two button reset and see if that helps.

I had the same issue on a D800 and D850. Found that when set to shutter priority and you turn the back dial past x250 at the very end of the menu if locks to 250 shutter max.

Not broke just the way Nikon lets you lock at 250.

Charles, you are a wise man. I forgot all about that.

On the D500 you get to X250 when you go beyond 30 seconds. OP need to turn the dial in the other direction.

Glad it worked out for you, I spent two hours to figure it out the first time it happened to me.
