Lightroom Classic and CC

I finally succombed to Adobe’s subscription. I have used Lightroom since 4 and CS6.

I had some installation issues apparantly caused by my full hard drive. The claimed feature to use another drive doesn’t work, and I made the mistake of starting with CC. After uninstalling the old software, which I was reluctant to do, the installations worked. The catalog I put on the CC version overfilled the 20GB storage they give you. Of course they offer more by doubling the price. I’m declining that.

I thought I could use the same catalog on CC and classic. But apparantly not. While I’d like to access images from my ipad, the CC version is incredibly clunky.

I’m interested in what others are doing about this choice.

Get the Adobe Lightroom Mobile app and only transfer images you want to work on to the Adobe Cloud. Also, if your HD is that full it's time to upgrade.

I solved the HD problem long ago with external drives. And I used them all the time with Lightroom 6. The problem is Adobe’s alleged feature to use them doesn’t work.

I have the mobile app. The question is how to use multiple catalogs on the two versions for the same images.

I have the LR iPad version on my iPad and the LR/PS desktop MacBook Pro version on my desktop of all strange arrangements. Both work fine. I know my desktop hard drive is beginning to get full and I will have to add an external drive soon, but I’m not experiencing undue anxiety about it. If some part of your new installation is not working, I would suggest contacting Adobe and working with them to get it resolved.

I’ve resolved the technical issues. I’m looking for suggestions on how to use the two apps or what other operational strageies people have developed.

They are as you say “two different apps”. If you use both, there will be potential duplicate images in both. Handle the dups in whatever fashion makes the most sense to you. I don’t tend to do heavy editing of images in both apps - I edit in one or the other. I don’t find it that hard to cull the least best or dup images out of one catalog or the other when I have a spare moment.

I don’t get what you all are saying - LR can’t use external drives? I have been doing this for more that 5 years. I have two sets of external. 2 for data and 2 for backup. No issues and the newer set with fast cable and collections is lightning fast.

Lightroom CC, now called Lightroom, is intended for folks who want to access their images from multiple computers anywhere in the world. It relies on having the images stored in the cloud.

Lightroom Classic CC, now called Lightroom Classic, is intended for folks who want to work with the traditional concept of files and folders in a workstation.

You can work with a combination approach for selected images by creating a collection in Lightroom Classic and syncing that collection (or several collections) with Lightroom in the cloud. Any edits to images in the collection are reflected back to Lightroom Classic. The limit to the size/number of collections is the size of your Abode cloud storage size.

If you are planning on traveling with a tablet or laptop and performing some editing you can create and sync an empty collection in Lightroom Classic before you leave and then upload files from your camera to the tablet/laptop on the road. The files will sync back to the desktop. Once again, you will be limited by Adobe cloud storage size.

Very helpful. I've avoided installing Lightroom CC, but now that I see how it can be used and not fill up the 20GB storage, I will install it.

Jrhoffman75 explained it well.

Although Lightroom Classic can be used as it has been for many years, Adobe has evolved their products in to an "ecosystem" to include photographers that use the internet and social media as part of their work. The best course I've found is "Learning the Lightroom Ecosystem" on Linda.com. https://www.linkedin.com/learning/learning-the-lightroom-ecosystem/the-power-of-the-lightroom-ecosystem?autoplay=true (Free through many public library systems).

"The claimed feature to use another drive doesn’t work"....It is common with Lightroom Classic to store photo files across multiple drives. Installing the program and catalog on external drives is not a good practice.

"The catalog I put on the CC version overfilled the 20GB storage"..... The 'catalog' is a file on a local PC. The 'cloud' Lightroom does not use a catalog.

"I’m interested in what others are doing about this choice.".... I've worked out a system where my primary storage is in Classic on my computer. Then selected favorites are in a collection that stays "synced" with (cloud) Lightroom. Versions of the (cloud) Lightroom are installed on my Android phone and Android tablet. Rather than calling them 'clunky', I would say they are "streamlined".

With the interconnected Lightroom Classic, Lightroom, Lightroom Android on my phone and Lightroom Android on my tablet, I can show favorite images in a variety of ways including a "Portfolio". I can also shoot pictures with my phone (within its limits) and have them sync into my computer installed Classic.

There is a link to my portfolio in my signature below. It is driven and managed from within Classic.

No. I use external drives. The problem was CC wouldn’t use it for the machination it goes through to convert a catalog. There is a dialog to let you browse to the catalog there but it doesn’t use it. It gives am error.

Thanks. This is what I am looking for. I’ll try to figure it out.

So how do I get it to delete the images it has uploaded?
