Spent a little time on Southern Maryland. I love the simplicity and dignity of the Amish.

I lived in Waldorf a number of years and went to their Saturday market from time to time and agree about their simplicity and dignity. They are a great people.

Agree 100%, if everybody in the world acted more closely like the Amish there would certainly be a lot less problems in the world today

There's more to the Amish than you might realize.

Yes, they are a wonderful people but photographing them is difficult. Driving out through Amish country around Lancaster, PA there are many roads where it would be nice to pull over and photograph an Amish farm or a horse drawn carriage but there aren't any shoulders on most of the roads through there and stopping in the middle of the road doesn't work too well.

The Amish are some of the most egregious and inhumane proprietors of "puppy mills" in the US - massive dog breeding operations that are mired in filth, horrific conditions to which the animals are subjected, forced to breed non-stop virtually from birth, and literally thrown on the scrap heap when their breeding is no longer viable. Crates of animals are stacked on on another, often 5-10 crates high, and all the refuse from the upper crates falls down on the lower ones, and are rarely cleaned. OK, the Amish might be promoted as these cute throwbacks to an earlier time in order to sell some furniture, but their treatment of their animals is grossly obscene and fully criminal.

What image? And this is the Chit-Chat forum, specifically allowing "non-photography" talk. You opened the door with your comment extolling the wonderful characteristics of the Amish. Maybe if you observed the Amish from a bit closer than "afar" you might see what is really going on. And if you consider the exposition of facts as a "rant" then I can see that any intelligent discourse in this thread is most unlikely. Do have a good day...

Nice to see peoples who don't try to push their way of life into others.

All too true. I admire some of the characteristics of the Amish, but did work with them in Lancaster (PA) for several years. There are some ugly aspects to them, and the "puppy mill" issue is one of a number. Like anything else, all that glitters...and that kind of garbage!

I read about that and that they kill the females when they are to old to breed. I have no love for the Amish

The Amish are not he worst folks in the world but suspect that most of us would hate to be Amish. The worst part is you can't go to school and learn stuff and you have to aske the permission of the elders to do anything.
