I've read a lot about Canon's throughout the feeds. Is there a distinct difference between the Nikon? Would one be greater than the other; DSLR, or is it all in the lenses in front of the shooter?

Each brand has strengths and weaknesses but all the modern high end cameras are very good. When it comes to images produced the main factor is in the space just behind the camera.

I am behind Canon's 99% of the time. I do have a Fuji bridge camera, a Panasonic pocket model and an older Sigma dslr. I have produced good images with all of them.

Thank you. I'm a Nikon man as well as a Chevy man. Some how they both fit mainly from one place to the next to do a shoot.

I own both Canon and Nikon DSLR'S. What you can do with one, you can do with the other. I like both makes but I find the ergonomics of the Canon cameras to be a bit nicer than the Nikon's, plus the Canon's are somewhat easier to learn and use. If you are a pixel peeper, the Nikon's have a slight edge on image quality but in the real world it's pretty much irrelevant. Neither make is really any better than the other, it's really a matter of personal preference, and what kind of lenses you own. Luckily, I own both Canon and Nikon lenses. If you are looking to buy a new DSLR and you don't already have lenses, I'd go with the one you can get the best price on. Either way, Canon or Nikon, you can't go wrong. If you are looking at mirrorless MILC'S, wait until the next round of models are released. By then the quirks and inadequacies of the first wave from Canon and Nikon will have been addressed.

Bottom line we like the chosen brand for mostly personal reasons. Some because we don't want to admit making a mistake and others because we like the ergonomics or some particular feature of the brand.
If you have skill or develop that skill any of the brands will perform as good as any other with the afore mentioned limitations a brand might have.
You just need to look through the hype and see if it meets your specific needs. I have found that Canon meets those needs as only they offer lenses with the flexibility none other have and optical quality with that versatility like the totally unique to Canon 100-400mm L MII

I too am a Chevy man. I've owned more Chevrolet vehicles over the years than any other make. When I didn't have a Chevy, I had a Pontiac or an Oldsmobile, although I did own two Chrysler products, a Plymouth Valiant, my first car, and a 1963 Crown Imperial, which I believe was the largest car I ever owned, although my Pontiac Catalina rag top was almost as big as the Imperial. I've never owned a Ford even though my favorite/dream car is the Ford GT. My current car is a Chevy Cruze Premier hatch back. Nice car but kind of expensive for a Chevy. It carries my Nikon and Canon gear quite nicely.

Basically, you can't go wrong, depending on the price of the camera you buy. More expensive cameras are more capable, but even entry level cameras can take excellent pictures. If you want a flip-out LCD or you have to shoot lots of frames per second, then you'll have to look for a model with those features. If Nikon, Canon, or Sony made bad cameras, they wouldn't still be making them - and selling them.

No, it is not all in the lenses in front of the shooter, it is IN the shooter. Equipment will never replace a thorough understanding of what it takes to CREATE a great image.

Is there a distinct difference - in short: yes

Now, is it relevant to your / anyone's ability to create objectively superior images: no. Each of the brands is different only in the most subtle ways and the differences typically exhibit themselves only at each brand's single or top few models of cameras and available lenses, such as the fastest frames per second, or the largest pixel resolution, or widest dramatic range at base ISO or least noise at ISO-6400. Or for lenses, what is the brand's faster aperture at 600mm, is this a native prime or an extended configuration?

There's also subtle differences in ergonomics. All brands have interchangeable lenses, but do you turn them left or right when mounting / dismounting the lens? Is there a button / dial on the outside of the camera that controls an operation, or can it be controlled only via a menu setting? Again, the differences are subtle, but may exist in a way that one brand just 'clicks' with you naturally in a way another brand will not.

Loyal Sony boy! I try to avoid digital cameras that still use mirrors.

Years back, a friend of mine with more money than brains decided to get interested in photography. He gave up woodworking and gave me a lot of good tools.

He went all in with Nikon ($10,000+) because that's what most of us were shooting. His pictures sucked! After reading an article written by a Canon user he put away the Nikon stuff and spent even more on Canon gear. Canon was less expensive, but he realized he needed more stuff. His pictures sucked!

We all sort of took him by the hand starting with how to hold a camera. Gradually the point came when everybody wanted to be able to produce work like Freddy. His prints were selling locally for around $300.

He never got rid of any camera gear and became just as comfortable with both Canon and Nikon.
