"Cremains" - Today's word from Word-A-Day. I knew what this word meant, but I was surprised at the pricing if you don't choose cremation.
“If the ever-soaring price of condos in New York City has your head spinning, wait until you shop for a cemetery plot. ... Basic cemetery plots across the five boroughs now generally cost $4,500 to $19,000, not including hefty fees for foundations, interments, and maintenance. ... An in-ground plot for cremains at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn is only two square feet and starts at $1,200.”
Jane Margolies; Property for the Afterlife; The New York Times; Mar 17, 2019."
In-home storage is free. Of course, once you're gone, your money worries are gone, too. Let someone else worry about cost.

Earlier this year, I applied for (and received) approval for myself and my wife to be buried in a National Cemetery. I got the approval letters about 2 weeks ago. If you or your wife are veterans, you are entitled to be buried in a National Cemetery. However, they are rapidly running out of room for in-ground burials. They are now requiring that you be cremated and you may be "interred" in an above ground "vault".You will also receive a marker plaque. The incredible thing is, all of this is absolutely free!

I thought a veterans cemetery would be nice. I mentioned it to my wife but she was not
receptive to the idea.

What difference would it make in the ground is in the ground!!
I buried my father in 2014 and was quite surprised at the cost! Even opening up the gravesite (which he had already purchased) was close to $2,000! The price is right and you are removing that responsibility from your kids.
I would argue the free part. If one of you is a veteran, that person paid with years of service to this country. Some of those years may have involved very dangerous locations.
Those of us living here with the freedoms we enjoy are indebted to those who served.

I told my family that I wanted to be useful after I died. I told them to scatter me on a patch of ice. They replied that we live in Southern California and it would be difficult to find one. So I told them that I wanted to spend my eternity on a shelf in my son's closet.
