We the day finally came. I tried out my new 200-500 vr lens Nikon. I used it on the D4 and was not all that impressed. Some of the shots enclosed. Now remember it's on a D4. Not sure why it's different on a D500. Maybe someone can chime in that has more knowledge than I do as to why. I went home and practiced on the D500 and found it so much better.
This Thursday more playoffs and I will use it a lot more.
It's very heavy more than 7 lbs with the monopod of which you have to use at my age (73). I am not rushing to judgement, but do need more time to figure this lens out.

I think they are all pretty good shots Jules. # 3 and 5 perhaps a bit less sharp than the others but over all very nice, especially for your first time using this lens. Looks like you had great weather, lighting etc. and good location to shoot. Did you use VR on all ? Sport mode on lens ? BB focus ? Other lens setting ? Were all of these shot with the D4 ? What were your camera settings, SS, aperture etc.
Please share this Thurs’s set. I have the same lens using a D5600 and appreciate your expert evaluation . Thanks. Paul

Hi Paul: Yep wasn't that impressed so far with the lens. I saw these pics. and said to myself let's see what it will do on the D500. I drove over to the park around the corner and shot stuff. Much better at stopping and focusing on cars driving by, color is good, at 500mm down to 200mm. Much much better for some reason on the D500. I will use on Thursday. It's heavy too, I must use the monopod more or I will be dead at the end of 7 innings lol.
The samples of the baseball game were shot at 1/2500 at 5.6 auto iso, auto white balance. vr on in sports mode. Here are some from the park. I am just rambling now.

Thanks for the info Jules. Looking forward to your next set Thursday. I too use a monopod. Wasn’t too heavy for football but as you know, not fast enough. I’ve had good results with track and soccer though. Paul

Perhaps I'm blind as well as chrotechity, but I'm not seeing anything BAD about the focus. Remember, it takes a while to 'get-in-sync' with any new long lens and a 500 is no exception. Much better than my first time! Best of luck.

Chris these shots were with the D500. Much better for some reason than the D4.
