I have a Canon EOS 80D and am considering either an 18-135 IS or 24-105 IS. Kind of an all around use lens. I have a 55 1.4 now but would like some comparison information about these two lenses. Yes, there is considerable cost difference, and I guess I'm wondering if it's worth the extra money. Also, I see some of the major on line sellers offering used lenses. Anyone have any input on making these purchases?
Thanks

The drawback of the 24-105 is this is a full-frame lens and you get a field of view closer to 38mm on the wide end when mounted to your 80D. Not very 'wide' and not as 'general purpose' as the EF-S 18-138 would be, where the 18mm wide end equates to roughly a 28mm lens after the 1.6 Canon crop factor.

Which EF 24-105 lens are you referring to. The f/4 L series lens or the f/3.5-5.6 IS STM version.
The EF-S 18-135 is a nice lens, I have one in my collection. I actually prefer the EF-S 18-200 over it's shorter sibling; it's a more versatile lens.
Here's the problem with EF-S lenses. If you are planning on selling your crop sensor body in the future and going full frame, the EF-S lenses become useless. The alternative to that is MILC. With an adapter you may use EF-S lenses on Canon mirrorless cameras.
Back to the lenses. If the 24-105 you speak of is not the L series lens, although you did mention it cost a lot more than the other lens indicating it may very well be the L series lens, I'd go with the 18-135 or the 18-200, both better choices than the non L 24-105.

Welcome to the forum. The Canon 18-135mm USM lens is an excellent general purpose lens for a crop sensor camera, with a very useful focal range. Focus is fast and the pictures are sharp. Mine stays on my camera a large percentage of the time.

I would go to DxO mark and check their reviews on those lenses first. I own the 24-105mm and really like it but I have heard that the 24-70 mm is one of their better ones and I don't know about the 18-135mm. The "L" series lenses are costly & heavier than the kit size versions but they are much better glass than the kit lenses. Shop around carefully before you leap on something new. Refurb'd and used markets are the best path for many of us with limited purse strings so don't overlook that option.
Good luck.

In general, if you plan to grow and in the long term I would not buy any S lenses as you grow and want a full frame camera you will find the S lenses don't work and have to start over and replace the lenses. Do it only once (that was .one of my mistakes).

They work on Canon mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras with an adapter.
