Opinion on Olympus Purchase 20190508
I would like opinions on the purchase of a Olympus OM 10 M1 Mark II. This is there most second expensive camera I am 75 years old and the weight of my Nikons (Nikon D500 and Nikon 5100) with their lenses is significant.
My interest with the Olympus is that it fits my hand hater than any camera I have had. It is like a glove when I hold it and fire it at the store. In fact I have held the camera many times when visiting the store. I know this may be a silly reason to purchase the Olympus.
I also have an Olympus Pen F and some lenses. Even with the additional Pen F grit it does not fit my hand in the same inviting way.
I take mostly macro pictures and have an Olympus 60 mg macro lens. My Other pictures are variable and barns etc. I take no sports. I do not plan to self my Nikons.

Thank you for your advice in the past and present.

I think you’ll likely be very happy with it. Back when the first Olympus EM5 was released, I bought it for the same reason you describe. It felt like it was made for my hands. It was also a darned good camera. I had actually ordered a Canon 7D and when I went to pick it up, it felt like a brick. No buttons were where they felt right to me. They were unboxing their first EM5 that day and I picked it up just because it was on the counter. I bought it on the spot and have been an Olympus shooter ever since. I now use an EM1 vii, in addition to my original EM5 which I still use as a lightweight option. I’ve won a lot of contests with images from that little camera. The 60 macro is a good one, and if you want to add to it, there’s a ton of lightweight options from Olympus and Panasonic. One of my favorites is the little Panasonic 20 pancake, which weighs about 3 oz, is very cheap and one of the sharpest lenses I’ve ever used.

Hi Terry, I am 77 and have been using the mark 10 II for about two years having downside from Pentax K3. Learning curve with the Olympus is steep, however the preset options are so good you may never need to get to deep in the menu.

My only other suggestion is you might want to spend the extra money for the E-M5 mkII. It is a weatherproof body and, with either the 60mm macro or the 12-40 f2.8 lense, it becomes a weatherproof system. Yes, the scroll menu is not the easiest to learn. But Olympus has what is called the Super Screen which allows one to select most of the basic functions from the back screen and change the setting to what you want or need. Weight, size, and cost wise, the system can only be beat by Panasonic if you need easier to use video. And full frame and APS-C camera systems cannot touch neither system for weight, size and cost.

And one more opinion; the way a camera and the control placement is on a camera, and how it feels in one's hands, is one of the most important items in buying a camera. It has to feel right or it will bother one until one gets a better feeling camera body. Not "silly" at all.

I am a Nikon (for over 40 years) convert to Olympus
There are a ton of menu items such as focus stacking
I’m in a camera club with monthly competitions with 5 of us Mu-43 users and we get our share of awards
Your gonna love the little beast

What’s not to like about it feature wise? But it is much bigger and heavier that the Olympus camera you’re used to. I got very excited about it until I read its specs: 2.1 pounds for the body. I’m 71 and traded in all my Nikon gear for the Oly m5 II because the weight of the Nikon was just too much. Some would say weight is a dumb reason not to go for the best setup you can afford, but if that’s what causes you to not want to take it everywhere, then your money is wasted.

Beyond technical capabilities of a camera, the way it feels in your hand should be the number one priority. Not silly. I am thinking from the mention of "M1" and "II", as well as being the "second most expensive" Olympus, that you are looking at the OMD M1 II (not M10).

Definitely a great camera and my current main camera. You will love it. I understand your concern over grip on the Pen F. I have rented it twice and finally bought an OMD M10 II as my "small" camera. Not as many pixels as the Pen F, but actually a little smaller and a better grip (but not as good as on the M1). Have fun!

I held an Olympus OMD EM1 Mark ii at a big box store back when it was $2000, but thought that was too much. I knew I would get one when the price came down. I just got one directly from Olympus for $1200, and love it. That’s $1500 on sale less another $300 bonus for trading in an old lens or camera.

I can only speak in my behalf and since I regularly shoot with my EM-10 Mk II I can tell you that it is a great little camera. Yes, it is small, easy to carry, low weight and very capable of excellent images. These little cameras are packed with technology which is far more advanced than that in dSLR camera bodies.
Go for it if you feel comfortable with the camera. You will not regret it.
I use mine with the excellent Zuiko 12-40 f2.8 Pro.

My only significant complaint regarding the E-M1 MkII was the menu system. I found the menus to be abear to navigate.

I think the OP is talking about the EM1 Mark ii even though he typed “OM 10 M1 Mark II” — the Em1 is their second most expensive camera and does fit your hand like a glove. The EM10 doesn’t have that comfortable grip, and is the cheapest OMD.

I have a Nikon D7200 and an Olympus PEN F. I have found the Olympus to be a solid performer particularly in the area of macro photography with the 60mm m.zuiko. I purchased a Chinese grip for the Pen F ($30) on Amazon. The grip works well for me when using the Panasonic 100-300mm lens. If you like to shoot outdoors you can find a sun shade to make the screen easier to use in bright light. See my earlier post - https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-589005-1.html

They are extensive. However, for most of what you actually use on a camera (aperture, shutter speed, iso, focus control, WB, etc) you never need to go beyond the dials and buttons on the body. When I need to do something that is not covered there, and not accessible on the super control panel, I Google it. Lots of people with time on their hands have figured out a lot of stuff I don't even think of trying!
