Canon just announced the upcoming release of an 85mm f/1.2 RF lens for their Mirrorless system. The lens costs a whopping $2700 and the recommended accessory is a $35 lens hood. Really? I wonder if they will soon stop sending lens hoods with their L series lenses, the hoods for their big whites start at $500 which there can be no justification for.

Greed and it’s goes beyond Canon.

Their RF lenses are extraordinarily expensive. I won't even look at it but much like you, I have a good range of glass in EF mount. I'm having difficulties with Canon's direction.

This past Christmas I was on the fence trying to decide between the 5div and the "R" until I saw the price of the RF lenses. I enjoy my 5d just fine.

You know I have 4 Sigma Art lenses that are smokin', I mounted the 50mm yesterday for the first time and a while and was reminded just how good those lenses are, luckily I have the original EF 85/1.2 that I was able to pick up at a reasonable price and am totally happy with. If I ever do move to one of their mirrorless cameras I will just buy the adapter for my EF lenses.... I just don't get Canon and their thing about hoods, when I looked in to the replacement cost for my 500/4 I at first thought it had to be a misprint.

I am one of those guys who won't own a lens without a hood, for me they are an essential part of the lens.

I treat my 500 lens hood like a child after discovering (when it was available) it was $750. I'm on the same bandwagon with lens hoods as yourself.

What I'm really missing in a body is reliable eye autofocus and a new sensor. It seems that Canon loves re-purposing their sensors as of late. Canon's real strength is their professional services and glass. They promised to speed up the product cycle and said they were slow to innovate about a year ago but I suspect the changes needed still takes time.

Their behavior I suspect has customers re-evaluating.

All that money for only one focal length?

The focusing system in the R system is supposed to be better than that in the 5DMIV, my problem with the mirrorless is tracking, I just don't think that the EVF's are there yet, I will wait, hopefully the cell phones won't get there before Canon.... LOL. I say that jokingly but I have seen some awesome cellphone images, the internal software they use makes taking a bad pic with a cell phone almost impossible.

The hood on my 500 is still in fine shape, just not as pretty as it once was, you know that the size of that lens makes it hard to avoid bumps and bruses from time to time, I purchased mine used and it was already marked up, but, I saved thousands and the lens itself is just fine. I am sure that a couple of those marks are from me, I am not a fan of the lens coat coverings, but I have another big white that is in like new condition, I think I will have to reconsider my position of the lens coat products.

When I buy a new lens, I buy a third party hood for $10 on ebay and use it and keep the original hood in the plastic bag it came in. I find that IF you sell a lens, it will sell quicker and for more $$$ if the hood and lens caps are in good shape. The one thing that gets beat up the most is the hood.

I am sure that it is a special lens, I love my 85/1.2 but I am not sure that I love it $2700 worth + an additional $35.

The new RF lenses are supposed to be very good, if you are a portrait pro it is probably not a must have, but it is also probably something that you can justify and write off against your income tax, the EF 85mm f/1.8 is pretty awesome also and it only costs about $400 new and just over $200 used.

I use Canon equipment, but when it comes to battery grips and lens hoods I buy non-Canon products. Canon prices are exorbitant.

Here is what I have seen....

Looking at Imatest numbers for the new mirrorless lenses of Canon and Nikon:

The new larger mount of the Nikon has really opened up their design and execution capabilities ! The Imatest numbers for Nikon are record setting ! - while the numbers for Canon are HOH-HUM.

Nikon has always led the way with exorbitant prices, - Canon figures if Nikon can do it - so can they ! But Nikon people have always been a "richer" breed - and they grumble - put pay Nikon's prices - Canon people are much less so inclined to pay ! - a different psyche !

Check out the cost of a battery grip for a D850...It's plastic and priced like titanium.

They don't give the tripod mount on the l series 70-200, they want 164 for it. Got a after market for under 15

Good photography comes from the photographer. It does not come from the make or model of camera. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Yet some feel they must have the latest thing-a-jig or what's-a-ma-bob. I do my best to keep my equipment inventory at a bare minimum. It's not really the cost of that damn thing. My wife won't let me buy something without her first checking if it is available cheaper somewhere else. LOL!
As for my camera, I buy lenses made by third party manufacturers. I have a battery grip made by a third party manufacturer and a flash by another third party manufacturer. I won't buy into the hype that all my accessories must be made by the camera's manufacturer. The one exception is the batteries in my camera were made by the same company. (I'm afraid of them leaking).
The only reason for the exhorbitant price tag is greed. But this is My Humble Opinion. If original manufacturers glass was a cheap as third party, I would buy it. I hope the original manufacturers get the message!

Happy Shooting!
