While true on some shots with definite centers of interest, seems like a total stretch on some of the pure mountain shots to make the narrative fit the facts.

I read Adams quite a bit and he barely touch on the golden ratio but didn't recommend for or against it.

I agree. I do think that artists with vision do this unconsciously at times because it "looks right". Once you start looking for it, you'll see it occurring more frequently in nature, and if you're a photographer, you'll often see it as a photograph.

One might accidentally use the format simply because that composition looks better.

This is very interesting as the Golden Means ratio of 1 to 1.618 is used in classical music constantly especially in Bach, Bartok and untold Renaissance composers. It represents not only a physical perfection but also a spiritual one.

I would have liked to have seen some landscape images and others where the golden ration did not apply and to shown specifically where the photograph fails the golden ratio test.
