Playing around with Zerene for the first time this morning. This was 20 frames of a recently dead critter I found in a window channel. How'd I do?

Is this a stinkbug? It looks a lot like the one Sippyjug just posted.

How does one identify these critters?

ID?????? A PhD in entomology might help. But easier is to make friends with a "Bug Person".

An invasive. Unique in the tubercles all over.
As to ID, hard work, a new language of odd, long words, dedecation, and for me, sixty years time in .
Just ask here, a shortcut.

Yep, it's a Brown Marmorated Stink Bug. I'm no expert whatsoever however we have them around here too and they make great macro photography subjects. Unfortunately they are accountable for considerable damage to fruits and plants. Next time that you bite into an apple and find that " soft brown spot" it's most likely due to these critters.

I posted earlier, thought this sampling of some dicotomous keys Weevils and some microlepidoptera might interest you.
Hope this doesn't cause any bad dreams or flashbacks.

Great shot. Wish things like that died in my house

Flashback!! Took an introductory marine invertebrate course in college. I believe I spent more time with dichotomous keys than I did on my calculous homework.
