I had the above lens since new - now I need a focus unit for it - my camera repair guy is unable to find one, and my search via the internet, to say the least, is frustrating - any suggestions where I might find Nikon Lens parts? Thank you

No longer made. Your only alternative is to find a repair person with access to a "photo junkyard" where they can remove a suitable AF-S drive and install it in your lens. For the moment you have a very nice conversation piece, but as a fast-focusing lens - that ship has sailed.

But do they specialize in sourcing parts no longer made?

Same thing is happening to my 18-70 f3.5-4.5 AFS lens. The AF motor is not working and Nikon just advised me they no longer serve this lens.
I do not use it, obviously, for birds in flight so I have been doing manual focus with it.

I was able to find the OEM part recently so I purchased one. The AF-S 300 & 400 f2.8 D II's as well as the 500 & 600 f/4 D II's all take the same unit and I have all of them except the 500.

I will send you the info later today, working right now.

There are some Chinese outfits providing motors and focussing units for Nikon lenses/cameras and others. The items look the same (or close) but I've not been able to handle them first hand so it is still a question. Gene51 says it is no longer made, so Nikon may not even be able to service it, but I would call them and ask if they can repair it. If it uses common Nikon AF-S focus drive mechanism parts, it may be salvageable. Might have to change a connector or some such, but would still be "doable".

I have been able to find replacement motors and focussing mechanisms stateside, or used working units, and of course donor lenses (if the item you need isn't already missing). I replaced the motor/and gearbox mechanism in one of my Nikon 18-200 DX/VR lenses recently and it worked out great. But I have also bought used items that turned out to be in early failure themselves, so it's a crap shoot. If it is just the motor itself, or the gearbox, you may have an easier time, does the technician know for sure? If it is a circuit board issue, could be more troublesome.
I will try a search also, if I find any useful info I'll contact you by this post or PM. Good luck in your quest.

RRiggins, on this site, claims to be able to locate repair parts, as has done work for others on UHH. I have not used his services, and can't endorse. He is - DiscountCameraRepair.com

Mid-State Camera Service, Inc. , also claim to be able to find parts Nikon no longer has.

I did just see dean100's post, he states commonality with other lenses, making the search more plausable, his info may be quite helpful to you.

Those motors are relatively easy to replace (as is the focus gearbox) and I have seen some available, the motors and other parts on Ebay for that lens and many others. If the seller offers return or some guarantee that it works, you could pick one up for $25 to 50, some from US, some China, etc. However, if you are happy with manual focus, and since that lens is an older lens, you may want to stay that way!!
