I must have about a dozen bird houses on my property. Every time I put out a new Blue Bird house the sparrows take over. If only they could read I would put up a sign, BLUE BIRDS ONLY!.

Well at least you're getting birds. I've put some up and got nothing. Plenty of birds but I couldn't make a sale :)

Put a block of wood with a inch and a half hole in it over the current hole making it a inch and half deep.
Then most sparrow will not enter.

The size of the entry hole is critical to attracting the species you want. Take a look at the Audubon site on the web, they print lists of the correct dimensions for bird houses. No guarantee that it will work in all situations.

Hal, I understand what you mean, however, these are fantastic photos of the house crashers.

Did you make these or store bought? DDLs really show the sharp details.

Nice House you made for them. Sadly the Sparrows kill the Blue Birds and take their nests I am told and that SUCKS. And Black Snakes are also a concern to the low mounted nesting boxes we put up for them.

Good luck with the work anyway.

I have 2 bluebird houses, and usually the chickadees take over, although i have had bluebirds in the past.
This year they chose a woodpecker hole way up in a tree. Not a great photo,but......

I think you may have a problem with nestbox placement. Blue bird houses are placed on posts in open fields. Farm fence posts may be OK but tall poles are better. Don't face the opening to the west (weather will get in) . Places with lots of trees are not good.

Yes, that’s true, but I, stuck with big trees. They have used the boxes in the past. Fickle little guys! Thx.

Thanks for the info. We have five houses for the bluebirds and occasionally have sparrows who try to use them..

Try putting two bird houses relatively close to each other...10 feet-ish apart. The sparrow will move into one and hopefully the bluebird into the other. That's what they do at the local park I walk in. They also hang small nuts on fishing line so they catch the sun and move in the wind (one on either side of the "doorway"). Doesn't seem to bother the bluebirds. The bird houses are built and maintained by a large birding club in the area.
