Hi Chaps,

I just went outside with my P1000 to take pics & video of the moon.

It is a beautiful full moon. Crystal clear night sky.

I had the P1000 on full zoom, 3000mm, but it doesn't get anywhere near the detail, or magnification that I see other people getting.

Am I doing something wrong ?

I was just set on the 'Green' Auto setting. Lens hood on, and my backyard lights were on so I could see what I was doing, although they don't light up the yard like a Christmas tree.

Any tips appreciated.

Paul :)

One solution would be to zoom max - on a tripod - and then crop the result.

Hi Chaps, br br I just went outside with my P1000... (show quote)

First get away from AUTO!
Then learn to control the camera and be a photographer. Your results will improve dramatically.

First, you have to know what "Auto" is doing. Second, don’t use it. And third, use a tripod. One thing that "Auto" does not do, it does not work well with scenes that are not average in lighting or composition. And that’s a big mouthful right there.

Thanks for the quick replies,

Yes, it's on a steady tripod.

I am a complete beginner, so I'm not sure what I'm doing.

I have ordered a book (it's in the post) that will hopefully help.

Now I'm also trying to get the photos & video on to my iphone.

I bought the Bluetooth remote for the P1000, but it seems to have mucked up my wifi settings.

A topic for a new post.

Cheers

Paul :)

Hello David,

As soon as I can get them off the card, onto my laptop, I shall share them.

They look pretty good but I think the zoom could be better compared to other P1000 users moon photos & videos I have seen.

I was amazed at how quickly the moon moves across the flip out screen/view finder at that level of zoom. In my ignorance, I thought it would be like filming a building or tree etc. Duh !

Talk about a moving target !

I have a Benro geared head on the way, so that should help.

Although I'm thinking a video pan head would be better ?

Cheers

Paul. :)

First thing to try, Paul, is the Moon setting, just two notches down on your Mode Dial from your Green Auto Setting. One thing the Moon setting does is create a 3 sec delay between when you depress your shutter button and when the pic is taken. Gives the camera time to settle down from your depressing the shutter, which almost always does create some movement of the camera especially at 3000mm.

Glad you were using a tripod. Very important.

Can I suggest you get Alexander White's marvelous instructional book on the P-1000? Amazon.com has it. I think it is far superior to the Nikon Manual provided.

First use manual it's easier.
Second learn how the auto does it. Once you know know how it does it you can then decided to use it or not.

Thanks chaps,

I shall take those suggestions on board.

And I'll look out for that book too.

Cheers

Paul.

Here are a couple of my moon photos as requested.

Not very good, but I am just a beginner at photography.

I'm surprised this was as far as the P1000 would zoom in. I have seen other P900 & P1000 users getting way closer zoom.

Not sure why that is.

Cheers

Paul. :)

Hi Jerry,

Can you explain how that works please.

I saw a youtube video where a chap say's he's cropped a zoomed in moon video shot in 4k to 1080p, but I have no idea what that means or how to do that.

Cheers

Paul :)

Most likely hey cropped their photos.
Besides a tripod try manual exposure and bracket down as the auto over exposes a bit. As to sharpness the lens is not going to be anywhere as good at max zoom as you see with other DSLR/Mirrorless cameras and long primes or prime quality zoom like the 100-400mm L MII.
But the ones you posted don't look too bad, I have seen much worse. You have just reached the technical limit of that particular camera as far as sharpness I would imagine.
