After relying on an iPhone for a few years, I am greatly pleased with the first shots taken with my new Nikon D5600 (all on automatic). Critique away; I probably need all the pointers I can get.

WOW-ZER!!! I'm impressed! Love them all, but my fav is the pink flower. I'm a newbie, and you give me hope. I just got my Canon SL1 2 days ago, and haven't even turned it on yet...(I think I'm afraid). Keep up the good work...and...send us more pic's!

Welcome, and great photos, I can tell already you have the "eye" for photography. The D5600 is one of the most versatile DX cameras out there and ticks all the boxes of what I love about digital cameras. It has a sharp sensor, is light-weight, has a fully articulating screen, built in flash, bluetooth, wifi, NFC, and can even walk your dog! (Well, maybe not the last, but it is versatile!) I got the D5100 when I was choosing a versatile camera, but then, the D5600 was still future tense. Enjoy shooting, and keep sharing your wonderful photos!

I’d say you’re off to a great start.

You are doing very well. My only objection is the composition in the shot of your dog.
Since this is a new camera it is perfectly fine to use AUTO but as you become familiar with it investigate more what the camera can do and learn it well. While at it try to learn some basic photography because it will be your first step toward even better images.
Congratulations on the purchase of your new camera.

Thanks for the advice. I used to have an OM-1 in the 80's (when film was expensive), so I have had some experience with manual settings. As you can understand, I was just so excited to have a new camera, so I had to rush out and take some pix. They came out better than I hoped for. This camera will teach me a lot.

Re: the dog pix -- Sheena is hard enough to get a picture of where she is looking at you and you can see the features of her face; usually she turns her head at the worst possible second, and when you do get her face, all you see is black, no features.

You are really going to enjoy that new camera. As you get to know it better and refresh your skills you will notice that Sheena actually has many tonal variations to her beautiful face, and is not really just a "black face", welcome aboard (you found a great place) and enjoy the new Nikon.

As for refreshing your (film days) skills, I heartily suggest checking into the downloads available from Steve Perry's Backcountry Gallery, he has much wonderful information on the implementation of the tools in Nikon cameras. Several others produce fine refrence books specific to the D5600, David Busch's D5600 "big book" will be excellent, Field Manual helpful, and the Nikon D5600 for Dummies would be a great pickup. Ebay has them quite reasonable, as do some book sellers, and it would be the bridge to speed your re-entry into photography.

Enjoy the new adventure!!!!

Thanks, olemikey! You know, everyone thinks Sheena is a black dog, but in the right light, she is really a very dark brown. I will certainly check into the reference books you mentioned.

I could see that (Love puppy dogs!!), she is a beauty, and you see what I'm seeing. The manual that comes with the camera is a great reference book, but the writing style and amount of additional information employed in those secondary downloads and books will take away a lot of frustration and mis-application of "new" tools of the digital variety, since you have some film background. Enjoy the ride!!!
