Most Productive Day of shooting in my life! Thanks for looking and commenting. Hogs rock! Download is a must for this one, too. The color and shades come out in the download.

Nice composition. Your moon is blown out from reflected earth light, so I am guessing you exposed for the foreground?

If you turned on "blinkies" on your camera, this would have become apparent, allowing you to adjust exposure for the moon. In post production it would have been easy to open up shadows for your foreground.

You are correct. The moon is blown out, but still somewhat serviceable. I did try to take the difference in EV into account by bracketing, but I didn't set the EV differential sufficiently high. Even if I had, there would have been the problem with crisp focus on the moon. I suppose I could have used focus stacking. Too bad. I love the fat round hoodoo on top with his whimsical expression and the light was pretty spectacular with the sort of alpen glow.

It was the end of a long day of hiking and exploring and photographing. I had arisen before dawn, shot until a quick freeze-dried dinner and then returned to the field for sundown. That's my lame excuse, and I'm sticking to it.

I guess it was one of my many failures over the years to "seize" a photographic moment and excel technically. I hate it when that happens.

When it does, I am reminded of a scene from the Marlon Brando Rod Steiger classic, "On the Waterfront". A black and white masterpiece. Towards the end of the movie, those two are seated in the back of a car at night. Brando has just thrown the fight that his brother, Steiger had fixed. Brando's face is beat up a bit and Steiger is dressed in his top shelf overcoat.

Brando turns to his brother [Charlie], Steiger, and says with a strong NY accent, "But Chally. Chally. I coulda been a contenda."

Maybe I too coulda been a "contenda" had I not technically missed so many special situations while trying to capture the unfathomable beauty of the earth.

Anyways, thanks for looking and taking the time to comment with a tip for the future. Much appreciated.

Thanks for looking and commenting. I just noticed what appear to be a couple of small "boogers" from dirt on my sensor. My bad.

Is that a halo around the moon from processing?

It is a little lighter. I couldn't tell if it's a bit of moon glow or not. Take it out to be safe?

I'm not sure but on the download it appears lopsided. Perhaps from some masking and adjustment to the sky? Put the RAW image up and any of can take a gander.
