Progress on Moon Shots

Confession. I've never been very good at night photography. Though I've read about proper techniques, a good shot of the moon has often stymied me. Truthfully, I never plan for it, so when a nice full moon catches my eye, it's too late to hit a refresher course before setting up the old tripod.

And speaking of "old" tripod, all I've ever used is cheap consumer items. Even when I bought my Lumix and upgraded my tripod, it was a Promaster 7100...which is nice and light, and everything works OK except for the tilt, which won't even lock tight for the little Lumix GX85 with a 100-300 tele. Well, that excuse is gone. I found an old tank of a Manfrotto in great condition and used it to capture the full moon tonight. (Don't worry, I let it go right away.)

So samples are here for kind, constructive criticism. I ended up with some oddities and a couple of shots I'm happy with an a few "meh." The odd ones? I've told my wife that the camera lens can capture a "ghost moon" on rare full moon occasions. Even she didn't believe me. I suspect it actually has to do with the Pro Optic C-PL Digital Filter the salesman talked me into when I bought the lens. I realize I've never taken it off - shows how much attention I've been paying to detail during my few years with the Lumix. In self-defense, I've only begun using this lens regularly, more often in the past favoring the 35-100 f/2.8.

Anyway, I've no doubt someone here will easily pinpoint the cause of my scalping of the moon. But first, my happy shot. Then a couple of the "odd" variety (which I actually kinda like), then a "meh" or two. Finally the Manfrotto tank - worked fantastically, but it may be a bit heavy to strap to the backpack.

Oops! I've see I've goofed and put this post in the wrong place. It should more appropriately be in the Photo Galley board, I think. Sorry I missed that! I'll see if I can figure out how to move this...but may have to await an administrator to chide me and do it for this wayward poster.

Well, I messaged the Admin about my mistake, Admin agreed my post should move, and here it is. Now I find I'm stuck with my #2 comment in perpetuity, it seems. Guess once Amin moves, poster is powerless to edit. Ah well. A sleeper anyway.
