I recently returned from this popular park that overlooks Chattanooga, Tennessee...many impressive and sobering views, monuments, and facts about the men who fought here during the civil war.

There is a small museum below the main point, down some stairs...that contained information about “Photography At Point Lookout”...I attached photos I took of items on display....The short version is that a man from Ohio, who served on General Grant’s staff, saw the potential of the panoramic view, and established a family photography business lasting more than 70 years. He photographed thousands of soldiers on the Point with the beautiful Tennessee River and the great Moccasin Bend as a background.

Be sure to bring your Senior National Park Pass for a no cost entry.

Interesting photos.....however, the first photo is probably taken from a outlook point in Arkansas at Petite Jean State Park.
Another where the soldiers are sitting on a outcropping of boulders is also a view from Petite Jean State Park.
I am well aware of these areas since we lived in that region for 5 years. Petite Jean was one of our favorite places when we had visitors to our region.

Nice rendition on photos.... I live right around the corner and have captured many different looks of these same shots; nice to see other takes on the same images. Chattanooga is a very photogenic area with lots of historical sites. A series of trails traverse the bluff at point park which lead to places like Sunset Rock where Union forces were observed entering the valley. Between the 2 military parks, Point Park and Chickamauga, there are enough monuments and statues to keep one busy for a long time. Chattanooga Riverfront area is a very nice walkabout if street photog. is your thing as there is a converted walk only bridge over the TN. river with scenic shots of the riverfront, paddlewheel river boat and views of downtown.

Thank you for taking the time to comment...to say I was surprised by your assertion that the first photograph was probably taken in Arkansas would be an understatement. Coincidentally, I have been planning a trip to Arkansas that includes Petite Jean State Park. I just went on line and it appears that the two areas have views that are similar.

However, my first photo is a 3 image panoramic, taken....as it states...outside the museum...in Tennessee.

The photo of the soldiers was part of the museum piece on photography at the location in Tennessee.

When and if I go to Arkansas, I’ll be interested to see how the two locations appear photographically.

Yes Dean, I want to go across the pedestrian bridge and do some night work of the bridge/bridges with the backdrop of the city, Paddlewheel, and the glass Tennessee Aquarium. Going to bring my compass and get oriented for some future early morn or late afternoon shots; maybe with a little ND. I think Top of the hill where the museums are would maybe be good for a Panorama. BTW, have you ever checked out the Long gun collection at the Chickamauga visitors center down in FT. Oglethorpe ? Cheers , Bob
