The update is quite simple and has instructions. It adds auto eye focus for humans and animals. I tested it this morning using the TV. We have no animals and I'd be risking my life if pointing a camera at my wife early in the morning.

It also adds an intervalometer which I haven't had a chance to try.

The eye focus works well. Just point at a face and it locks on to the nearest eye. It won't track like the A9 or A6400. Same for animal eye; dogs and cats...it did not work on birds although using the TV may not be a fair test.

It won't do human and animal eye simultaneously. The camera needs to be set for one or the other.

The A7R3 had eye focus before but it needed to be activated by pressing a button. Now that this function is automatic I reprogramed to button to AF lock which is not quite like tracking but somewhat close.

Thank you Sony for the extra features at no expense.

I found a glitch. When animal eye is on and your eye is on the view finder the focus point jumps to the lower left corner of the screen.

When animal is off or both animal and human are off the focus point behaves correctly. I contacted Sony and reported it.

Hope they can correct quickly although it has little value to me. I shoot animals only occasionally and getting the focus point on the face works almost always anyway.

As a side note animal eye does not work on squirrels or birds.

You may be hitting the back screen with your nose, and that will reset the focus point to where your nose hit. I do that sometimes, and just have to be careful to engage the viewfinder before my nose touches the screen.

The eye focus works perfectly on the a7iii with both animal (dog) and human (wife). Awesome technology.

I did some experiments and I think you are right...its my face. Thank you very much. Now I'll have to contact Sony and retract my complaint.

This will be very good for photographers, who enjoy wildlife photography. And those future Safaris will be much easier now.

Prior to 3.0 eye autofocus (human) needed to be activated with a button push now you don't need to do that and can program the button with another function, it wanted.

BTW, my wildlife safaris consist of my back yard and local forest preserves.

Backyards are far less costlier too. Next best thing. A Zoo. They do charge admission though.
