I did the mats/frames on these shots using Affinity Photo. I hadn’t tried it until today so I still have a lot to figure out. Below are two Affinity tutorials that gave me my starting point and I did some experimenting from there. Once you have an expanded canvas you can change the color and using the Effects Panel, you can add shadows, bevels, etc. That is what I had the most difficulty with and I didn’t find any videos to help with that part yet. If you use Affinity and have any tips to add, please feel free. I plan to experiment more and may write a detailed tutorial if I figure it all out. If you get it figured out first, you are more than welcome to write a tutorial with all the details.
Manager note: the Vimeo tutorials Carol posted are no longer online, so try:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=affinity+adding+bordersThe mats can be wider on any side desired. The white mat on the second shot is slightly wider top & bottom than on the sides.
Thanks so much for your time, Carol! I will add this topic to the tutorial page
here.Also, in
this topic, newriverpaddler would like to hear from anyone who has printed and framed photos with virtual mats/borders.
Appreciate everyone's interest and hard work!
Thank you for posting this, Carol. I'm still on the low end of the Affinity learning curve, so I'm not quite ready for mats and frames! But will file this away for future use.....

You're very welcome. Affinity is a great program so keep at it.
Thank you so much for this information Carol!
I have been struggling with Affinity to learn the concepts, but it is a great post processing software capable of great image creation.
I crop a lot of my images "artistically" and when trying to get the lab to print, their auto crop cuts a lot of the print . . the tech told me to "create a border to print size and it will print the full photo" . . . yep bet it would.
I will try this technique tonight and see how this works.
Thanks again!

I hope this does work for you. It should but be patient. I had to watch the videos more than once.
So for me I should pop up some corn a glass of white and set in for an evening of learning!
Thanks again Carol!

The wine will definitely make it more enjoyable!
Beautifully done Carol. I have been pondering whether or not to add Affinity to my arsenal of editing software. The presentation on the second shot is very pleasing.

Thank you, Jan. I like Affinity a lot and it is what I use for most processing. It probably depends on what you already have and what you need to be able to do. Learning new software is always a challenge.
Beautiful images Carol, and I also enjoyed your matting. Thanks, Bev
