Do the previous gen 16 MP Fujifilm sensors create better images than the current 24.3 MP units.

On the order of "Don't be afraid of old tech....." and don't fall prey to "Joining the sheep in assuming newer tech is better tech.....", I just found and reach this. I have seen similar references. May have saved me a $1000 in a purchse of the X-Pro1 over the X-Pro2.

Since I probably won't lose any money on a near mint purchase of the X-Pro1, it seems worth the gambit to buy a 1 and use it for a couple of months before getting an X-Pro2. May end up with both.

PS, I am not a believer in backup bodies, but I do believe in retaining a previous generation until I know if both camera's have different pluses to them.

Interesting question and it relates to a similar comparison I made between the X100F (24MP) and X100T (16MP).

Both cameras use the same lens - 23mm DX (35mm full frame equivalent) so their optical performance is the same.

With the X100T you get larger pixels and about half the price (used) as a new X100F.

Neither camera uses (or needs) an AA filter so the resolution is not compromised as much as with the more common Bayer array with an AA filter.

And 16MP is plenty for display full screen on a 400k monitor or printed at 13x19 inches.

The link you provided is to a pretty good article, and the author (rightfully) concentrates on the positive qualities of the lenses used moreso than the 16mp -vs- 24mp differences. Thanks for including that.

As regards opting for the 'older tech' X-Pro1 over the newer, more expensive X-Pro2 as a way to see if you like it, by all means, do so. The X-Pro1 is extremely capable, using the beautifully optimized Fuji lenses, and is equally so when using (with adapters) other maker's legacy/classic lenses. On my end, though, after seeing the results made with my Pro1, like you, I considered moving 'up' to an X-Pro2, but ultimately went with a (mint/used/considerably less expensive) X-T2. Whichever way you go, I think you'll be quite impressed with any of the Fujis you're considering.

Amazing! I was just about to send a private note to you with just exactly this question, Mind-reader Kuzano! I'll go read the article. THANK YOU!

Edit: I learned a bit from the article ~ well worth reading, but as Cany143 mentions; not really a whole lot of comparison 'twixt the 16MP and the 24MP sensors. And again; I notice no love (or mention) of my beloved X-E2. (the X-Pro's and the X-E2's apparently use sensors of two different generations?) ~ maybe a good thing, in case I ever need to purchase another one.

I AM curious as to how the more recent Fujifilm lenses perform on the older 16MP sensors and processors.
Does one need the 24MP processing system to justify the lenses that are arriving in 2018-19-20?

Edit of edit: Just read this on "Photographylife": Sensors: X-Pro1 has a sensor that is identical to the one found in X-E1. Naturally, it is also very similar to the X-E2 sensor. Don’t expect any image quality improvement, be it dynamic range or high ISO. The only real difference lies in the incorporation of phase-detect AF sensors in the newer X-Trans CMOS II of the Fujifilm X-E2.

Not that I am going to upgrade my 16MP camera but essentially all cameras today have enough pixels to fill a 4K screen but when the 8K becomes widely available then I won't have enough pixels to fill the screen.

No, the X-T2 is a big step up from the X-T1.

I am shooting with X-E2s. Recently I wanted to treat myself for my birthday with XT2, very popular, great camera. I took several shots with both cameras using the same lens trying to keep the same settings. After comparing the shots I decided to keep my X-E2s. Yes, it is not the right camera for tracking moving subjects but the IQ that comes from it is just excellent. And yes, 16mx is more than enough for most of us.

Which lens(es) were you using, dandi?

The only Fuji lenses I have - 18-55 and 55-200.

Interesting comment, and I was so close to an X-T2 last week based on this similar thread, also the X-T20.
