...and it starts to get something like I had in mind. The amount of control you have when in a group photo session - i.e. when theres a group of photographers shoulder to shoulder, tripod to tripod, is limited. So you've no option but to sort sort things out when you get home. In this case I've added some gentle Dodge and Burn, balanced the the White Balance across the shot (which was badly affected by the odd lighting set-up), added the steam and some colour to the lamplight that the chap is holding up. Before all that it had the standard adjustments for the raw image of course. It's good enough to satisfy the steampunk group, who naturally want to see some results, but I'd like to know what you think of it and whether you would have made other changes? Your response is appreciated, please feel free to critique as you see fit.

This is really nice!

It would make a great album cover.

Thanks for sharing!

You’re welcome, pleased you like it. Hadn’t thought of an album cover - but top hat fella at the back is a drummer so you never know!

My eye went first to the lantern being held by the man on the right side. Is that OK? I really like the editing, including the smoke. A striking result that could be the centerpiece of a collage of all your images from the event.

Sort of inevitable, but what can one do? He’d look a bit daft if I blacked it out?
Yes, the centre-piece is a nice idea Linda. Must crack-on with the others - I took them last October!!

I agree with the album cover comment, or an event advertising poster. Very good vision and implementation, magnetoman!

Fine work. All the misfits fit wonderfully. I do have trouble "believing" the cloudiness at the bottom. Perhaps a little soft-edged burning here and there?

It's a very nicely done image. I think it's great as it is. There are certainly other versions you could create, but this looks like something the group would enjoy having in a frame. Color and lighting are well managed. If you wanted, you could go further with the steam by adding more texture and brushwork to make it more dramatic, but it is fine as it is.

I never know whether it’s enough or not - more practice required methinks Bob. I’ll try your suggestion. Biggest problem was getting everyone to look at the camera - despite calling for them to look at me and waving my arm around, gradually bringing the majority of eyes to where I wanted them, two of the ladies have totally ignored me. But then, I’m used to that. Just like being at home when the daughter visits! Many thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, the group seem well pleased with it Min. As I’ve said to Bob, I do need more practice at the Steam/smoke/mist thing - adding more texture sounds good. I’ve several more to process so I’ll try harder with those and perhaps come back to this one when I’m better at it. Many thanks for your comments and suggestions. Much appreciated.

I've sometimes had luck adding a texture layer of cloud of grunged cloud, tinkered with color and light, masked and painted it in at various opacities with various brushes to gain texture. This is something I do with many of my dam bird images, to enhance the clouds of mist. It isn't quite the same thing as steam but I'm thinking the same principles might apply.

Agree maybe the lantern light should be reduced in intensity just a bit, but no so much that its no longer obviously a lantern. Perhaps a little more amber?

I did add all the yellow that’s in and around the lamp, so adding a bit more is an easy task - but I’m fairly happy with it now. Nevertheless, being an agreeable type (I’ve pre-read what Linda has to say!), I’ll give it a try. Thanks for your thoughts on it, they are appreciated.
