What is it that makes falling down old barns so attractive, anyway? I wouldn't want a house that looked like that.

The falling down barn tells a story that will be forgotten when it eventually succumbs to the forces of nature. The photo immortalizes the story for future generations to enjoy.

On a personal note, growing up on my Dads farm, the barn had long since fallen. All that was left were large cut rocks that made the foundation. In my time, the rocks and scrub brush gave shelter to birds, rabbits, mice, and of course, snakes. So, in its life, it gave shelter to animals, and in its death it gave shelter to animals.

I love shots like this too; for some reason much more photogenic than a new barn. I often imagine the barn's history; the building of it, the barn in full use, the selling and abandoning of it, the back-story I'll never know. It also can be a metaphor for so many other aspects of life...

I really like the subject. Photo is clear and sharp and it tells a story. As to why I like old barns and houses, I can imagine the satisfaction and pride when the last shingle is placed and the last door hung. Then I wonder what lead to the abandonment and the destruction and decay.

Those barns were homes for horses and cattle. Since most farms have been consolidated and few horses are around and cattle are in huge herds there no long is need and the barns decline until they fall over. Sad but true, except for good pics. Don Z.

Old barns seem to tell a story. This one is a beauty and nicely shot.
