American Bittern, that is. Two days ago at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. On the far side of a drainage ditch, I spied something of a different color. It was so intent on eating, it never heard or saw our car.

Thanks, vonzip. I see them pretty often, usually hidden in the reeds. This was the best sighting I've had.

Really nice series, Katy. I have only been able to photograph a bittern on one occasion.

Thanks, kp. They are really strange looking and amusing. One day we saw 5 of them, very unusual! Often they stay still and do nothing. Patiently waiting, I guess.

LOVE those raised wing images. Pushing 70 years-old and NEVER saw that before!
