She bemoans the fact that teachers earn 11% less salary than folks with similar education in other fields....

My questions for her are two, does she realized that teachers get about 4 months out of the year off? My second question is where is she going to get the money from?

Maybe we can reduce the corporate welfare to make up the difference.
Maybe we can tax the uber-rich at a higher rate.
Maybe we can take fewer trips to play golf.

BTW, At face value, it's true that Teachers have more time off than other professions but most teachers I know work a summer job to make ends meet.

Frank at close to $2000 per working week I do not feel so sorry for teachers, if you want to pay them more then thin out the bureaucracy that takes a large amount of educational dollars from the classrooms.

I am all for getting rid of corporate welfare, it is generally a government insider deal, it is corrupt at several levels and there is no place for it in a market economy.

Uber rich? I have a real problem with CEO salaries, with the l***hes of Wall Street and in the Banking industry, there is corruption in the system that should be rooted out and fixed, the Disney CEO making $50 million a year is neither fair to stockholders or the employees of Disney in my opinion... But taxing and giving that money to a corrupt government is hardly an answer.

Blurry, That's like saying that Consultant who gets paid $2,000 dollars a day is making 620,000 dollars a year. That's not the way it works.
When a school day ends, the teachers day doesn't. Most of them are working at home, marking tests, preparing lesson plans and doing research.
Personally, I'd prefer my taxes go to paying teachers as opposed to dropping bombs on civilians. But hey, that's just me.

They chose that profession knowing it's requirements and compensation, not to mention joining a union to do it. I don't feel sorry for them, they can always use their education to pursue better paying opportunity.

Your response is indifferent to what is most important--the education of the youth, the future of the U.S.
Teachers shape, educate, and influence the minds of this countrys' future. Good, dedicated, well-paying educators are responsible for making good, thinking, responsible future citizens. Without serious, principled teachers to guide them, children will become l***hes on our society, our government, detrimental to making America great again.
So, don't be too quick to discount what teachers do, don't pay them so little that they seek other better paying opportunities. This country needs good teachers, not for what they are today; but for how they determine the future intellect and discipline of citizens. To compromise on quality education, leaving students in the dark without guidance from well-intentioned educators, they will become irresponsible slackers, and the dregs of society, feeding off others good fortune.

Parents are not always what they should be.

Depends where the job is. That's probably a lot in your neighbor hood. For the education they need, and the sk**l one hopes for, teachers that I'm aware of don't make much.

Paying teachers more money doesn't suddenly make them better teachers. Most of the great teachers don't do it for the money anyways, they do it for the love and passion of education. You also have to factor in the cost of all the superfluous BS school districts blow their limited money on. The district next door to mine just built a multimillion dollar sports complex at the high school--which can't be used for non-school functions. They actually just had to spend a few $100K more to erect a high fence around it because kids kept hopping the low fence to use the soccer/FB fields and BB diamonds in the evenings and on weekends. Oddly enough, they also have one of the highest school tax rates in our county, despite the fact it is one of the smallest and a middle class demographic.

Some of the teachers my kids had through grade school had were completely useless, just talking to them you could tell these particular ones had tenure and were just mailing it in from here on out. One all but told my wife and I "she instructs, gives homework, and tests and that's all she's required to do", "if the kid is having problems, that's up to the student to study harder and the parents to help". She also flippantly said "there are some good topic specific tutorials on YouTube, have her look them up"

This argument will never go away. Based on the day's teachers work they earn a good salary. July and August are summer vacation no school. There are a couple of other "break" weeks off. They have a pension system also healthcare.
The money will never equate to an educated child. That requires a home life where two parents are engaged in the role of mother and father and what is demanded of their children. That is the first rung on the ladder. That is the crux of the problem. When there is a female who doesn't care one way or the other. A female who will not help with school work. There is no demand that the child is grade proficient. Nor help by instilling a demand that the child is responsible for participation in his/her future the battle is lost. This has to take place in the home. Where is the male who helped create this/these children? That dude is in the wind. He takes no personal or financial responsibility.
You can pay teachers all you want they don't go home with the child. Going on about giving more money to teachers is just more political BS. It's what they want to hear. You just want their v**e.
